    Porsche big reds pad replacement

Can i do this simply by unlocking the top part of the caliper clip rather than taking the caliper completelly off the disc?

i need to install the anti rattle shims

    thanks

As you said ..just swing the clip up ..push back the pistons and pop in shims/pads and away you go

great! ill do that! i hate having to unbolt the whole caliper.

also read somewhere that small amount of brake fluid is best to be drained as it may overflow when pistons are pushed back.

          Yes, BUT....

it depends on the condition of you callipers. There is a stainless guide the pads run on, and because of the dis-similar metals the alloy corrodes under them and makes the pads tight. So if this has happened you will need to take them out and clean/paint under them which requires the disc out the way...

Also I am not convinced copper grease is best on stainless...

I don't understand why you'd need to drain any brake fluid? If there was too much in then it would be overflowing from the start? Do you have to top up the fluid when the pads get low???? You shouldn't have to!
Just some finishing touches to do now

The chambers were the pistons sit take up fluid when pads are low and you always get fluid coming back up over the mark when pushing them back

I've never had this problem, is this only the RS2 calipers?

You can damage the seals in the master cylinder, easier to crack the bleed nipple(makes the piston go back easier as well) HTH

how can that be damaged? you mean by pushing the piston back, or by draining some of the brake fluid?

i have a large syringe to use for sucking some of the brake fluid off the bottle if required.

my pads were recently changed but, by removing the calipers.I need to install the anti rattle shims on one pad only.

Haha, yeah, you think?! The bleed nipples on those callipers are a sod! They can strip the thread out the calliper.

Vas, have you put any fluid in since you put the last set of pads in? If not, theres no problem really.

This SHOULD never be a problem if the fluid is topped up when all pads/discs are new. when they all wear there should be enough oil in the reservoir to not need topped up, so when you push the pads/pistons back in when putting in new pads the level will just come back to where it was.

Where it comes a problem is where the fluid is topped up when the pistons are out a bit, or when the car has uprated brakes and the reservoir is not big enough to still have a sufficient level when the pads are somewhat worn, the fluid needs topped up and thus when the pads need replaced it is pushed out the reservoir.

Hope that makes sense, its early!

yes we have. the bottle is full now following the last bleed we did with Rob. So should i drain some mls in the syringe and put them back in you think?
pads and discs are practically new.All fitted roughly 3000kms back(greece) and calipers are not in bad shape.

It depends on how full the tank is, I normally just open the top and stick paper towel (industrial type, not kitchen roll!) in the top to soak up and that may come out. But yes you will need to remove some one way or another more than likely. Just make sure to wash it off any paint immediately
