    Brake System Warning Light

When the car is stationary and you press the brake pedal with the ignition on the system checks come back as OK. Then when I press the brake pedal hard it travels quite a way and the Brake System warning light comes on.

The car has been stood for a couple of years so the brake fluid isn't going to be that good so it will need changing anyway. The manual says to check the level which I'll do tomorrow morning. It also suggests the brake bomb but my experience of these on the UR is that the pedal goes hard when this is knackered as there is no servo assistance.

My main point is that I had the hydraulic line off to fit a new seal in the power steering pump, so is it possible that I've got air in here and if so how do you bleed it or is it self bleeding?

The power steering pump and associated bomb circuit are self bleeding.

To suggest why the warning light comes on it'd be helpful to know if this is engine running or not, car moving etc., do the brakes have servo assistance?

      Hi John,

Just been for a drive and everything was OK with no warning light. When I was stationary on the drive the pedal felt spongy and the light came on.

Not sure if this thread is too old to get a response, but my brake system warning light comes on every time I start the car (with the beep) then normally goes off after driving a short distance.

The only time it stays on is when I am sitting in traffic going downhill towards a certain roundabout in Aberdeen moving slowly and on and off the brake constantly the light comes back on with a beep and stays on the rest of the way home.

The next morning back to usual, comes on at start up then goes off after a short distance.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated????

Its worth checking out the other threads on the brake bomb. Have you got the right PAS fluid too? You can test out using the test procedure on S2central.net

I had some issues last year with this and swapped out my brake bomb to test with another and mine is OK and tested the master cylinder and all has been well since, not sure what fixed it though

I found I had an issue with my bomb bleeding pressure if the car was stood for a few weeks. I get round this by starting the car and pressing the pedal down hard and holding it there with the engine running for a couple of minutes this seems to recharge the system sufficiently for the light to go out and stay out whilst I used the car regulary, if I leave it unused for a few weeks the problem comes back, never had pressure fail whilst driving after I've done this but I guess its quite low as I can force the light on by pressing the pedal several times in quick sucession.

When I had that I changed the bomb, also note whenever you plan on bleeding the brake system, just get an eezibleed so the servo doesn't take any grunt of your bleeding efforts
