they were 4 pots i think on the sport, not sure of the size (295 x ???) , see here : http://www.elektro.com/~audi/FAUrQ/S...elsbrakes.html

The S1 had watercooled brakes at one point, for the rally of Finland (1000 lakes) but they were not enough to haul the heavy S1 to a halt quick enough. I saw an original S1 at the Audi forum and the drilled discs were completely shot....and tiny too.

I have a copy of the 1984/85 homologation spec for the S1 and it shows four different brake configurations were able to be used.
          1/ 15" wheels : AP caliper 4 pot
          295 x 28 front disc
          290 x 25.4 rear disc
          2/ 15" wheels : Girling calipers 4 pot
          304 x 28 front and rear disc
          3/ 16" wheels : Girling calipers 4 pot
          330 x 30 front disc
          280 x 22.2 rear disc
          4/ 16" wheels : IPASCO calipers 4 pot
          330 x 32 front dosc
          280 x 25.4 rear disc

Caterpillar,I will have a look thru the spec to find info on engine, turbo etc.
An interesting note,as far as the homologation spec was concerned, all short wheelbase quattros were know as SPORT QUATTRO S1.

            Thenks.

Strange how thouse tiny brakes could keep with 600HP engines.

problem was that they didnt contain the stopping power to deal with the s1, i have a clip of the E2 in full flight in Finland with steam shooting out from the brakes as the watercooled calipers faught to slow the animal down......

                  So that's what that was!

I thought while watching that vid, what the hell is that!
It too amazes me how those brakes even managed to haul that car down!
How do you think a modern Big Brake Kit would have fared on that car?

The original Sport quattro was 2134cc with a maximum overbore to 2142cc.With a turbo multiplication factor (at the time 1.4), that gave a NA rating of 2987.6cc with overbore size 2998.8cc.3litre was the max NA engine size.
                      bore 79.3mm
                      stroke 86.4mm
The Sport evo spec was different again.
Normal capacity was 2210cc.A maximum overbore to 2142 was permissable.
                      Bore 79.71mm
                      stroke 85mm
From 1988 four engine capacities were homiligated.I guess this referred to the Pikes peak car and the allowed maximum overboring.
                      2110cc
                      2134cc
                      2142cc
                      2166cc
All appear to have a standard bore of 79.9,so maybe various crankshafts were used. Also the turbo multiplication factor had changed to 1.7 so max NA engine size was 3682.2cc.
I hope this is of some use.

                          Get your anorak ready... According to Walton's new quattro book;

                          The Pikes Peak quattro (which was converted from Unser's record setting 'standard' S1 from the previous year) has the followning brakes;

                          Front- 304 x 32mm = Rear- 280 x 25mm

I'm pretty sure I've seen drilled discs (front at least) on the Sport, S1 & Pikes Peak.

The older, LWB rally quattro had non-drilled discs, same size back & front, with unbranded 4-pot aluminium calipers. I've seen these calipers fitted to ur quattro road cars, and if I could get a pair I would fit 'em to my S2 (hopeful quick fit...?) Will post a photo if poss.

The Sport quattro road car had AP calipers and 295mm discs all round.

It is my train-spotter ambition to find out if all of the above are interchangeable, inc. S2.

They had good, properly adjusted suspension and good drivers.

95% people with BBK tend to brake when it's not really necessary. Good drivers don't need mega uber brakes. That's sad but true (I'm BBK fan BTW ).

On tarmac S1 used additional brake venting on the rims. Also special racing brake discs help sometimes. S1 has cross driled, directionally vaned rotors.

This photo's from the April 2001 Audi Driver mag and the calipers fitted to a road going 20V ur-quattro.

Other rally teams used similar looking things, eg. Toyota Celica Turbo.

Any ideas where I could get a pair & chance of them fitting standard S2 & discs?

And any reason why not to fit front brake setup on the rear as per the rally cars? The front & rear struts should be the same, right?
