    Hi Spec Brakes - Query

Was just wondering what people thought of these brakes? Had a smaller set on a Mk 1 Golf and they worked fine for a number of years before the car was sold.

Don't want to encourage adverse comments on anyone's products, but the calipers are light in weight and the discs are going to be light also, but no one ever really mentions them on the forum?

It's all monoblocks, and discs from gsf, as I say, just wondering.

I appreciate the Hi Spec kit is dearer new, than s/h monoblocks and new A8/S8 discs, but leaving that factor aside, what are they like?

    Thanks either way.

not used Hi-Spec myself, but I've heard nothing but negative comments about them. This coming from the kit car fraternity where they have been used a lot. Wildwood get better reviews than Hi Spec.

Stay away from them, go AP Racing or Porsche monoblocks tried and trusted

What I like about wilwood is that you can select the piston diameter, they have a generic mounting bracket that can be machined down to size and you can see a technical drawing for any of the products. rallydesign.co.uk are the reps this side of the pond. They haven't done a kit for the s2 so you've got to make it up yourself.
Ferodo DS2500 isn't available for every caliper they offer and quite a few of the calipers have no dust boots on the pistons.

Are you trying to fill the 18" rims?

tbh the calipers are not of the quality of the porsche.

i had the 2 piece 310 x 32 disc and 4 pot superlites. they do varios versions mine looked like monoblocks in style.

the brackets were not machine to size. they were big lumps of ally already done.

willwood is not really road car stuff.

Brembo / Porsche are probably the most respected performance road car brake anywhere, not much point arguing that.
If you try to buy an s2 kit, they haven't done one before and you'll get a lump of ally to machine.

                All,

thanks to all for prompt feedback. Will act on advice.

AP's site seems a bit awkward/unifomative for me, or is it just me? I like pictures rather than diagrams.

Will stick with finding a suitable black set of Porsche monoblock calipers, was undecided between 323mm or 345mm disc. I apprecaite an A8/S8 would be the logical choice for an inexpensive new disc, but can anyone suggest who to contact to obtain a price for either size of disc with an internal alloy bell, the lighter weight appeals to me.

Maybe it won't after I discover the price, but just wanted to check it out nonetheless for my own piece of mind.

I take your point Jamo, the combo is not tried and tested for no good reason.

                Thanks.

                Kind regards.

i run 993 tt discs with custom bells. on the 6 pot. i didn't want the a8's either.

discs are about 117 each plus bells. maybe bambridge for bells. custom brackets to suit.

I was driving with the standard Brembo Porsche upgrate withc 330mm brakedisc. But I was not satisfied how they were performing on te track (just didn't brake hard enough). Because we have some expierence with HiSpec I chose for the following setup:
                    - In fron 6 pots, with 360mm brake disk;
                    - Back 4 pots, with 330mm brake disk, including an handbrake function.

                    I use Carbonloraine brake pads.

Because HiSpeck hadn't the brakets available we send the wheel hubs and the made the brackets for free. This meens they now have a kit for our S2 available.

In my opinion the brakes are nicer machined then the brembo brakes, and are much leighter. My expierence is that they also brake much harder. I also must say the are expenciver then the brembo brakes.

Sounds interesting, got any pictures of the rear setup? Is it a coupe or avant?

                              Evert,

Thanks for info and photos. Do you have one of the handbrake cable meeting up with the rear caliper?

                              Thanks.
