    996 Had enough!

Fitted 996 upgrade kit about a year ago, after about 15 miles feels like something is binding on passenger side. Very vocal and can feel right through the steering until you brake and then vanishes!
Been to 3 respectable garages and brakes have been stripped but still happening!
Thinking off getting rid ,and going back to standard as a total pain in the **** tbh, i realise this is a problem with this set up and i guess there is no answer.
Car is just back from the spray shop and looks like just off the production line, but can be heard before seen!
    Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers,Mike.

Common problem, mine were the same, loads of info on here about it although I just lived with it but it was highly annoying !

Someone will come along and advise you with what to do so don't panic

A few thoughts (from experience) -

      Loose wheel bearing
      Misaligned caliper / carrier
      Pads are too thick
Pins have not been ground back enough.
      Pads are not moving freely

I'm sure you've been through this many times already but hopefully something will come up that solves it for you.

sticky Porsche approved pad stickers on rear of pads? These should be new every time you strip the brakes down AFAIK.

Piston Inserts/Dampers - Anti Squeal shims I think is the tech name for them...

Are the pads & discs brand new too?

          What bracket did you use?

I was told anti squeal shims from Porsche, iirc they were quite expensive for what they were but if they sort it they are well worth the money.

I had this problem with my old 996 calipers, tried everything to stop the resonating but nothing worked. Eventually gave up with them and tried a new pair of calipers with everything else exactly the same and the noise stopped immediately. So the only thing I've been able to conclude from this is that some calipers are squeely.

you can use the anti-squeal shims more than once - had mine on since day one (about 6 years from memory). You need too ensure that:

the pad pins which the pads rest on in the caliper are smooth
that you use anti-squeal paste (cera-tec is best)
the pad pins are back enough so that there is aprox 2mm daylight between disc face and edge of the pin to account for any thermal expansion
the alignment on the hub is good for the disc...nice and clean, no rust etc

sorting those out should ensure noise free use and smiles when using them, its a great, proven setup - hope you get them sorted.

Brand new pads ,discs ,rs2 carriers ,brake lines and calipers slightly used from a forum member. Nothing wrong with the equipment, but must be something very miniscule to upset the balance IMHO. Still sad as i have spent a small fortune and the car looks mint.

                  Cheers,Mike.

I had the pleasure of looking at a brake setup last week for another forum user. The outer diameter of the disc was making contact with the spring plate that holds the pads in place. Definitely worth checking. This could be solved by putting a spacer between the caliper and the mounting bracket.

Also the pins that the pad rests upon need a good couple of mm ground off them to make enough clearance. You'd need to be able to see 1-2mm clearance between the pin and the disc in each case. 8 pins in total, it's easy to miss one.

As long as the caliper pins are ground back sufficiently and the pistons move freely and cleanly, apart from physical damage you can pretty much rule out the caliper as being the problem. If you can "feel" the problem I would look at disc runout as the probably cause here - chipped, dinked or plain dirty hub is normally the cause.

Anti squeal shims all the way buddy...... I got mine off eBay for £15 there we're advertised as boxster one but I got the par number and they turned out to be the right ones. They may be about £40-£50 from the dealers but it will stop the noise. Mine do it now and again with the build up of brake dust a quick wash and everything's fine again.
Just some finishing touches to do now

Do yours have a spring clip on the back rather than the piston plug?

If they do it sounds like the ones Porsche fit to the rear calipers.

The ones pictured are the proper ones that I have fitted to my calipers and are the ones I see all the time on these..
