    Brake failure!

Drove home from the airport last night, turned into the drive and the brake pedal went to the floor

Checked this morning and brake fluid was way below the minimum in the reservoir. Then noticed the big puddle of fluid next to the left rear wheel. Took the wheel off to find the below. Very lucky this didn't happen 5 minutes earlier than it did

Does anyone know which parts I need to sort this out and how much of a job it'll be? This is on an 1995 A6 2.6.

    Cheers for any advice

    Tom

****! Lucky escape. This is the second brake hose failure in as many weeks on the forum! Last one was a "stainless" braided one!

If it is the rear brake hose, I think that the PN is 4A0611775. Seems to be unique to the C4 Audis, i.e. not C3 or C5.

Thanks for the brake hose part number.

The problem is that I don't think it's the brake hose that has failed. The corrosion seems to have happened in the place where the brake hose connects to the metal brake line. I think the hose on the caliper side is ok, and the brake line looks ok too... it's just where they meet that it's all got corroded and come apart.

Any thoughts on what needs to be replaced here?

        thanks,
        Tom

It looks like the fitting has broken away.

          Lucky ******!

hmm, don't suppose anyone's got the ETKA diagram to show what that fitting is?

            Cheers,
            Tom

twoqu's referenced thread contains the diagram below. Item 18 in English is "intermediate piece restrictor") 4A0611789C. A cross check on this makes it a C4 NON-quattro part. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent C4 quattro part (perhaps because they had ABS?)

Unfortunately the OP did not post exactly what vehicle he has other than A6 2.6. Despite his username he is not talking about an S6. Of course he might have a 2.6Q.
That failure is common place on 2WD vehicles. We will have to wait for the PO to post some more detail about what model he has.
Even us S2 owners have to state 3B or ABY to get the appropriate help.

Hi - thanks very much for the diagram. The car in question here is an A6 2.6 Avant - it's not a quattro!

Apologies for the confusion with my signature - I do have an S6 but it's off the road at the moment... this is my 'spares' car

Anyone know where to source 4A0611789C? I was kind of hoping that part came as part of the brake hose kit!

                    Cheers,
                    Tom

                        Did you source these after?
Would have liked to see exactly what they were and why they are relatively expensive!

                          Haven't fixed it yet.

The part (18) in that diagram wasn't fitted to my car. The brake hose attaches straight onto the fitting on the brake line.

Unfortunately the brake hose that euro car parts supplied came with 2 female fittings, whereas I need male to female (as shown in the diagram)

Can anyone recommend where to source the correct brake hose? Does it have to come from Audi.

                          Cheers,
                          Tom

It actually turns out that the side which failed had the part (18) fitted but the other side didn't. Weird.

The other side probably failed previously. Once they found out the cost of the restrictor, they just stuck the brake pipe/hose together!
Without seing it, its hard to make a judgement. It presumably is just a connector with a smaller hole in it. Looks like they got rid of a load sensing valve to the rear and just restricted the flow, with the ABS picking up the slack!
Sounds like you got the other flexy hose, not the one to the rear caliper. You don't have to use Audi parts but brakes is one area where you shouldn't economise. Should be able to source a good quality replacement.
