    UFO brakes again.

UrS4 avant with UFO brakes. These appear to be about 310x30 with a large single piston caliper (ATE I think), can these actually be made to work or am I ****ing into the wind? Had a quick look today and the inner pads are nearly down to metal but still have about 5 mm on the outers, leading me to believe my caliper sliders are seized. New pads will be ordered tomorrow but looking for a more permanent solution.
I'd like to go for the Merc 320x30 disk with some sort of 4 pot, does anyone know what PCD I need? And what offset I need? I know I'll need to design and manufacture caliper mounts, and don't laugh but I was thinking of using Land Rover 4 pot calipers. I can get new ones really cheap and they stop 2 tonnes of Range Rover no problem.

    Any advice would be welcome.

    Graeme.

I wouldn't go near UFO brakes. The replacement pads are about 300 quid.

Mercedes use the same pcd (5x112) as the S2. Watch the centre bore as sometimes they are different.

Hat height on the standard S2 disk is 31mm

Ive got the same orrible UFO's on my urs4, turned into a running joke yesterday when the car was on the Audi owners club stand aboout how many people would ask why i had drum brakes on the front
Ive got EBC pads on mine and they are slightly improved but not a lot. Simplest upgrade is to fit a pair of front legs from the facelift version (the urs6) this is pretty much a straightforward bolt-on replacement. I wanted to do this but finding it hard to source any. Instead im looking at fitting s8 front calipers and discs to the urs4 legs. Tim at QRS is helping with this (01829 771165) and will hopefully be done in the next month or so.
Rears will be upto the job as theyre vented as standard and use a bigger piston then the likes of the s2's etc.
Hope this helps, any pics of your urs4?
      nice one

Mike, thanks for the pcd info.

Gav, from your post it looks like you're keeping the standard legs and just making brackets to take the A8 calipers. Do the A8 disks fit with no mods and what offset are they? I'd certainly be interested to hear how the project's going, please keep me up to date. No pictures of the car yet, it just a bog standard (apart from Mihnea chipset and K&N) S4 avant. It's actually identical to the Unicom S4 avant before he carried out the wheel and suspension work.

Yep thats what i plan to do, untill i get upto Tims and physically measure the difference in the mounting points im not sure what modds will be needed, pretty sure the a8 discs are the same as s6, so im hoping s8 ones will fit on the hubs. The pcd is the same 5x 112.
Ill let you know when i get more info

A8's can use an offset of between 35-42 and have the same bore as the urs4 and s2. The urs4 can use offset between 30-42. Hope that helps.

Cheers Gav, car looks great with those alloys, are they 18's? If so, how do you find ride/handling on rough B-roads. I live out in the sticks and most of my driving is on poorly surfaced roads. I really fancy a set of 18's but I'm worried it would just be too hard a ride (oh err).
I think I'm just going to buy a set of disks with 35mm offset and make the caliper brackets to suit.

                  Cheers,

                  Graeme.

I'd look in the brakes section and look at the A8 and Porsche caliper conversion. I don't know if the front suspension on yours is much different from the coupe. Cossy Killer has one and fitted the later struts etc.

Thanks David, it was Mihnea that suggested a Merc disk but this site confirms the conversion. I think it was the early V12 SL series that used these 320x30 disks, it's just the offset I need to worry about now. The site says you keep the standard UFO legs.

                      Cheers,

                      Graeme.

It's a pleasure, glad to be of service. I should spend time looking at dodgy web sites and not memorising technical information about cars I don't own!

yep, 8x18's with 225 series tyres. The ride is firmer and it does show up if you have any ropey bushes, but nto too bad to be honest, road noise is slightly more noticeable but i can live with that. Id recommend it.

Gents: My wife and I each drive a 1991 200 avant with the 3b 20v Turbo and both have the UFO front rotors.... peformance wheels and tires were the exception, and a 15 inch wheel was considered an "upgrade" for many - Audi had to figure out how to increase the brake capacity while being confined to the 15 inch wheel. Because of its mass, the UFOs are sensitive to warn inner bushings on the lower control arms. Because of customer complaints, audi retrofitted some cars with either V8 or urS4 hubs and G60 calipers and rotors - which actually have LESS brake capacity.

Now, if you want larger brakes and are running 17 inch rims - and have the g60 hubs, you can go to an A8 rotor, RS2 brackets, and Porsche calipers...I think that used G60 struts are about $400 USD....

                              Hi Peter,

Are you telling me you've actually got decent braking performance with the UFO's? What's the secret? You mention the worn inner bushings on the lower control arms, how do these stress/warp the disks?
