The best penetrant I have seen so far is stuff called Plus Gas, and the next best stuff to use is good old diesel. Yes I know I'll get slagged for mentioning it but trust me it works. Tie a small piece of cloth around the offending sensor and soak it with good old derv. Keep topping it up daily for a while and away you go.
Between working on agricultural machinery in the old days and removing the most stubborn of glow plugs on more modern oil burners I have used many means to bust rusty, stubborn fastners. Plus Gas works very well, just pleeeeease dont use WD!
      +1 for diesel

On the subject of removing the sensors, anyone got an opinion on whether or not it's worth my while removing and cleaning the face of the sensors to try and eliminate an intermittent ABS Warning Light. Am I correct in believing that the face is magnetic, and could possibly be holding iron filings, etc?

@Tonybolony, you are right to say that passive ABS sensors consist of a magnet and a coil. I think the cause of a intermittent ABS warning light is more likely to be caused by a heavily corroded or cracked ABS reluctor ring.

Always make sure theres no crap on the face of the sensors but what I have found to cause most ABS faults are the "teeth" on the cv joint filling up with muck, so get your (missus) toothbrush out and give 'em a clean up.
Once you get the sensors replaced make sure they are located fully home 'cos if there's too much of an air gap it will play havoc the system and give you a chattering brake pedal when coming to a slow stop. BTDT.

                Slight thread resurrection

I have just purchased an S2 that has a rear ABS sensor fault. I'm thinking the easiest fix is goint to be to splice the rear sensors into the front. Is it litrally a case of connecting up the rear sensors cables to the front sensors, obviously with the front sensor cables still attached?

                Thanks in advance

No no no, that will likely end up with you sliding into a ditch backwards.

What is meant is removing the rears often destroys them and they are expensive. The front sensor is the same sensor with a longer lead at about half the price, so splice a new front sensor onto your remaining rear lead.

Under no circumstances try and cross connect abs sensors.

Happens fairly often on aircraft, usually resulting in a Smokey mess where the wheels and brakes used to be.

                    Ah I see.

Where would you recommend to get the sensors from? I assume Audi don't sell them any more?

                    Thanks

ebay, audi , or a hgv garage that deals with trailers fitted with wabco abs systems.

Once I have replaced the ABS sensor will I need to clear the fault off the ECU or should it pick this up itself?

I don't have VCDS but don't want to send it to be MOT'ed if the fault is still displaying on the dash.

                        Thanks

I got a couple of rear sensors from Amazon for $16 each with free shipping. The plugs all matched, the sensor fitted well and the basket thing was included, the cables were a bit shorter than the OEM ones I removed and the round grommet was smaller but they still fitted fine and I just fitted the grommet in with sealant. They turned up from the far east but didn't take that long to arrive, I haven't put the car on the road since I fitted them but the dash warning has gone. They seemed dirt cheap compared to everywhere else I looked but time will tell if they were a bargain or not.

Thanks, So you didn't need to clear the fault with VCDS to get rid of the warning symbol?

No vcds, the warning symbol had gone the next time I started the car after plugging in the new cables.
I'm far from being an expert tho as I've only had my coupe for a few months. I'd been rebuilding the rear end and struggled to get the sensors out when I was stripping it out so just cut the cables to remove the hub and get on with things, as you'd expect the car immediately flagged the fault on the dash. Still struggled to get the sensor out of the hub in the garage so basically destroyed them to get them out thinking they'd be cheap to replace. After a month or so I was ready to reassemble things the discovered how much they actually cost, eventually Google turned up the Amazon ones and they were cheap enough to gamble on. Fitted them and the dash warning went immediately, suppose the car will have saved the initial fault code but there's certainly nothing on the dash now.
