Is your vehicle not required to have the ABS functioning as a requirement of the MOT -I think it is a requirement here in the UK, that it has to operate.
it is on my to do list but feel it will be better all round to have a complete loom made for the things i am keeping than trace trough and delete the things am not.

I watch all my cars go through the MOT test. I've never seen the ABS being tested. The braking test on each wheel tests the braking power but doesn't test ABS kicking in as far as I can see?

Each car should self-test when the ignition is turned on, so the ABS lamp should illuminate and then go out. If this happens then it's an indication to the tester that the ABS system should work. That's all that's 'tested'.
It should fail if ABS is fitted but the lamp doesn't illuminate at all, or doesn't go out
Looks like their could be a market for a little device which sends power to the check lights for a couple of seconds upon start up and then extinguishes them

Yup, or just wire it off one of the other lights that comes on with ignition, and off when the engine starts. ABS, airbag, etc do it.
A holding relay or some electric magic was my first thought, but 2 wires seems less effort.
