Doh - Brake pad inprint on disc. What now ?

As per the title I have managed to leave pad material on the brake disc surface. This is now giving quite a judder - and warped brake disc feeling when braking.

I didn't bring the car to a complete stop when "bedding in", but I did put the car back on the drive without having much of a cool down time. I believe that is what may have caused the problem, as the discs looked in good order before. I have just taken the wheels off of the car, and can now see the pad outline on the discs quite clearly.

Was hoping that someone can suggest what I should do now? Google searches bring back different opinions, such as proceed with the bedding in procedure again (10 or so brake runs from 80 mph down to 5mph, then slowly accelerating plus repeating), getting the discs skimmed, replace the discs, or take it easy on the brakes for several hundred miles.

The setup I have is 996 calipers, with A8 discs. I am hopeful that I haven't trashed the discs as they are in good order.

    Any advice would be welcomed.

On both sides or just one ?
Sounds like you had a dragging brake or air in a calliper!

The drivers side is worse, but there are inprints on the passenger side too.

I did bleed the system when fitting the calipers, but may not have got all the air out.

Didn't notice that the brakes were dragging, or is it something that you would not feel?

A heat gun or jacking it up after a drive and spin them, I'd re bleed them tho and go from there, give the discs a LIGHT rub of emery paper if they really need it, just to get the pad/glaze of discs

You should never use sand paper on disc ! A light pass on the lathe should get rid of the Pad print

Or just get them smoking hot, that's what I've done in the past with the DS2500s as they're quite sift and imprint the disc every now and again.

Never once had or heard of a disc being damaged by getting a rub of emery paper, after being cooked, which is what's happened, to get going again. Fare point thought, whish I had a lathe lying around

Each to there own, find the cause, or pay to get disc done and fubar them again.

Ok - so if I give it another go at bedding in (correctly this time) I should hopefully remove the pad material off of the disc.

Helen often does this to the S4, I have to go out a rag the **** out of it for half an hour and come back with the brakes smoking, always sorts it

I don't have that excuse - it was my driving on this occasion. Looks like some hard driving in the near future for me.

Don't make me dig it out of my archives but there is an Audi TSB on removal of rust on disc brake rotors on Audi D2 A8s that sat on a dock in the US before being put into service. Guess what the recommened procedure was.

                          Lathe?

                          Nope. No way.

                          Sanding disc in a drill?

Yup. To remove the surface rust and re-create a circular cross-hatch pattern.

"Do not use regular sand paper or emery cloth as the aluminum oxide abrasive material"

There are lots of non-aluminum oxide abrasive papers on the market that will do the job.
