Crappy RS2 Handbrake - best solution?

    All

If mine is anything to go by the hand brake on the RS2 is total garbage. Even replacing the hand brake shoes and adjusting the set up makes little difference when leaving the car on a slope.

What I'd like to hear is feedback on how effective replacing the hand brake cable is or whether that's just another waste of money.

Alternatively what are the options for replacing the system with something that actually works? What is the likely cost?

We discussed this a little bit ago. See RS2 Handbrake, does it ever work

I will install rear RS2 brakes in my S2 next month. I bought a Brembo caliper emergency brake, so I will have in my rear hub two calipers.
        I don't remember but I was a cheap price.

Seperate handbrake caliper is the answer, rs2 one is just cr@p and I don't know why ala my thread referenced earlier up

I think the consensus on that old thread was "no" with a few exceptions

I haven't adjusted mine in a while, but it was pretty good when it was all fairly new and adjusted. Couldn't lock up wheels but it held the car. My car has been stood outside since October and it seems really effective now though - car isn't moving

With occasional maintenance and replacement parts it can be kept in pretty good (MOT passable) condition; I've not heard of anyone replacing it on an RS2 but I know others have fitted rear monoblocks and would have needed to fabricate something. Second caliper as per Gusolotti's post would seem like the way to go.

              Gents

              Thanks for the responses.

Saltinot, it's quite funny you linked to a thread where I actually posted, shows you what you forget but then again I've had so many other issues since this fell back to the bottom of the list!

The additional caliper shoulds like an interesting concept, I'd like to know more about that, perhaps a thread explaining how this works/can be fitted?

One of the reasons this is a real issue for me is that I have a pretty steep drive and need to leave the car on there before I open various things to get in the garage, often the kids are left in the car so don't want to put them in danger as there's a raod at the bottom of the slope....not ideal

I will take some pictures during the process setup and post here in this thread.

My drive's fairly steep to and my handbrake passes the MOT but won't reliably hold the car on the drive. I reverse on and leave it in reverse as well to be certain.

Not yet. No time no space to park the car for a long time.

Whats the difference between the handbrake on the rs2/s2 and a 1995 80 quattro?
I own both and the rs2 handbrake can only hold on the smallest of slopes but the 80 quattro can hold on very steep slopes and hasn't needed any maintenance in the 10+ years i've owned the car.

Can you put the system from one of these in the rs2/s2?

Rs2 hand brake uses shoes like a drum brake on the inside the hub/disc. Everything else uses a cable to actuate the caliper and pads.
