    Refinishing alloy brake caliper pistons.

I'm sat at home with a mangled finger board out of my mind so I'm trying to spend the time researching bit's and bob's for my various projects.

Does anyone know the score regarding getting alloy brake piston refinished? I'd like to get my Alcon calipers sorted and I'm not sure if the piston's finish is anadiosed or not but it looks like it. Their not heavily pitted but could do with a fresh coat of whatever is on them, I also need a seal kit if anyone has any suggestions.

Sounds like you need to purchase new pistons if they are pitted. Re-coating them won't affect the pitting as they are probably hard anodised.

Cheers Steve, yeah I had a suspicion I probably need new pistons, can't see them being very affordable given that a genuine seal kit is about 100 quid from Alcon I'd really like to get these calipers sorted as they were part of the original Nothelle conversion but it's starting to look like I maybe better off going for some more modern mono blocks.

Those will be really good calipers Kit, I would persevere with them
You can probably get a new piston machined & anodised pretty cheaply if necessary

That's a really good idea mate hadn't thought of that. And yeah I do want to persevere with the Alcons as their a cracking set of brakes and one of the few original bits of the conversion left.

I stick some pic's up in the morning David.

I had the same Alcons on my Nothelle and IMHO they are better than the 996 monos except they are more expensive to maintain, pads and two piece disks etc. However the performance is better and they can accept a 32mm wide disk! compared to the 996 upgrade with the solid steel A8 disk the Nothelle setup is loads lighter, helps unsprung weight also, as you probably know.

                Cool, thanks.

I tend to agree more effort to refurb and maintain, but should be worth the grief.

Jamil, that would be great if their the correct size. My pistons are 41.3 mm diameter x 30.5 mm tall and 38.1mm diameter x 30.5 tall, all +\- 0.1 mm.

Dan, yeah their a very light weight set up. another reason I'd really like to revive them. Do you have any heads up on where to source service items like rotors and pads etc. I'm kicking myself for not snapping up the set you had for sale a while ago, didn't have the spare funds then but I would have bitten your hand off now for £400.

Anyway I'd say my current pistons are knackered, I dug them out to measure and take some pic's and their far worse than I recalled. Wonder if Kev Bambridge would be able to knock me some new ones up, I'll drop him a PM.

Here's some photos, there's a bit of oxidization on the caliper body's but nothing that serious and the piston bores are perfect, their stripped bare at the moment but I'll get them freshly blasted with whatever media is safest before repainting them.

I found Compbrake to be the cheapest for rotors, pads I used were mintex and were the 16mm thick ones, mine were from CRN at Chesterfield.

Looks like I have a set of pistons sorted via Jamil, got to give him a call at lunch time to try and sort some seals which he thinks he can get as well.
