  • RS2 Big Reds-Parts help

After doing a brake inspection on the RS2 at the weekend, due to me not owning it long,i thought i would fit the recently purchased new front pads as advised by another member who was running the said pads(Pagid)as they where good and no problems to report.
Anyway... upon further inspection it seems i have what is commonly known as "pad pinch" due to slight corrosion underneath the stainless pad sliders. It's not to bad too be fair,as the pads still move but not as freely as they should. Also i tried the Pagid pads and they would not slide in,again i guessed this must be due to the corrosion lifting the sliders? So i cleaned everything up and re-assembled using the original pads with a view to ordering new parts from TPS.
One thing i did notice was,the Textar pads that are currently fitted, have a painted anti rattle shim almost the full size of the pad bonded onto each pad.NOT the self adhesive damping washer, that has parts that locate into each piston within the caliper (part no.8A0615231D).Strange as i thought the Textar pads where the OE Pad?Could someone confirm if this is correct, regarding the part number above please, and should this still be fitted??

So today i made the call to TPS and was shocked at the prices for the stainless sliders x4 (8A0698430B & 8A0698430C) and the damping washers x4 (8A0615231D).I had a rough idea of what i thought they would cost after looking on the Vagcat forum unless the prices are old??

Can anyone advise another supplier?A Brembo specialist or Brembo direct?

    Any help/guidance much appreciated.

Had the same problem as you with my brakes. I just ordered the Porsche monoblocks to get rid of this problem. From what I understand this is a problem that will come back in close future anyways so if you plan on keeping the car for a while you should consider replacing the calipers.

I've used Nottingham Porsche and I can ask the chap I deal with the costs if you want...or why not try desgin911.com.....

I know it does vary between the type of calipers you have as I used to run boxster S calipers and now run something else and the anti squeal shims are different.....as you mentioned a 1 piece/2 damper shim as apposed to single shims per piston....

I bought every part (except callipers) including all the shims for my 993's from this place when Dialynx serviced/replaced my fronts and rears.

I scoured the net and made pricing comparisons - Berlyn won on everything .... I won't even bother looking elsewhere if/when the time comes for more brakey bits.

Yes ... I couldn't fault his knowledge and especially prices. He's not like some of the newer sparkly Porsche websites but he certainly won on price when I cross-referenced with the "others" ... including some pretty powerful Porsche part eBayers.

Yes, my RS2 had factory upgraded 993TT brakes so all these part numbers are correct for what you are doing.

Whilst Berwyn were excellent when I bought all the bits, the guy there knew about the RS2 brakes and especially the 993TT option they had (he had heard of the standard red's on RS2') ..... so I presented him with those parts numbers I found by looking at the Porsche exploded diagrams you can download from his site.

The ONLY thing to mention that we discovered when fitting the bells and discs,

My original RS2 993TT front discs had a bell height of 37mm.
993.351.045.10 and 993.351.046.10 (the current cross-reference Audi to Porsche) have a bell height of 34mm.
                    We swapped the bells.

                      Great,thanks for confirming.

At some point in the near future i want to have all four calipers re-painted,but for now i will replace the pads, sliders and damping washers.

Are you still running the hard lines to the calipers or flexible hoses (goodridge)? As i think this would be a good upgrade too.

Be carefull with wath you put on then. Don't use the ones that this guy had on!

Here it's not permitted to use these hoses as it's harder to see when it's about to break than on the OEM ones (probably among other things).

                        And this one

                          Hi Carl,

Just spoken to Berlyn services about the brake parts (very helpful) and just wondered if you replaced the pad sliders too?If so do you have a part number,as he is not 100% sure on the sliders part numbers.Just trying to avoid sending incorrect parts back and forth.

                          Thanks again for your help

                          Andy

I just reuse the dampeners never had a problem

The discs listed only have a 40mm hat so no good for a Rs2 unless you have bells to swap
