I know I'm going to be waxed for asking this but.....

Why is it bad for some of us running 16" wheels to use Porsche/Brembo rear calipers in the front of our CQ's? Is it a very bad idea? Just want a clarification.

This is the type of brake caliper I'm talking about.

    Nice caliper really.

Panzer, I don't think there would be a problem, you would simply need to swap the steel crossover pipes and bleeder screws. The porsche rears are leading and our set-up is trailing. Otherwise, it's a sensible upgrade to a 4-piston monoblock, especially when you can get them used for $250 from LA Porsche Dismantlers!
Like I said, you could probably mate them to a decent set of Wilwood rotors to fit under your wheels.

one more thing...i'd also go to stainless braided hoses all around and aggressive street pads to really feel the difference!

I fitted mine at the weekend and the braided hoses i used were the longer ones in the Mk2 Golf kit, fit a treat

The only issues i believe were fitting inside the wheels as it gets very tight

which rotor/caliper combination are you using now?

The rear calipers have a smaller diameter piston which can make a mess of the front / rear balance.
              Be careful!

Aren't these calipers a little better than the standard...

G60 calipers that came on the 20V CQ? I am not tracking the car and have no inclination to go beyond my 16" wheels. I just want a little improvement over what I have done already. Better pads and rotor doesn't do the trick. What harm can using the type of caliper I have posted do?

why would that happen? If Panzer is replacing his front G60s with a larger four piston monoblock, why would that upset the balance any more than someone else's 360+mm rotors with 6-pot calipers?

I can't remember who it was - perhaps lee - but someone did the calculations to work out how much fluid it takes for the G60 calipers to move the pads 1mm and also for the monobloc (front) calipers to do the same. Freakishly, the fluid volumes were almost identical.

Just bear in mind that the piston diameters are very different between the front and the rears on these 996 calipers. So in my eyes, if the fronts are a good match for the car's original master cylinder - the rears probably wouldn't be so good.

There is also the issue that the rears are only designed for 25mm thick disks. Don't think anyone has tried to fit thicker disks in there yet.

But hey - if it works - let me know and I may put some on my corrado!

@ Alistair C: From my knowledge, Panzer runs 16" wheels year-round because the roads in his area are not smooth enough to warrant 17" wheels. with the rear 996's, it's not about how much fluid is required to move, but it's about pad surface area and the notorious anti-fading calipers that Porsche provides us with.
Personally, I think they would make a nice upgrade at a fair price. Match them to the american A8 rotors (312x25mm) and it's a pretty good deal. Custom hats aren't expensive or difficult either. Plug, it will give you the added bragging rights of sharing something with porsche other than our ignition switches!
