has anyone upgraded their rear brakes? discs + calipers? or know what can be done with off the shelf OE parts?

Is there any way to adapt the front S2 calipers to the rear?

hmmm.. don't know Mik! hopefully someone will post the answer... I thought someone used A8 rear discs etc at the back end?? I need to replace one rear caliper straight away (only got about 50% effective brakes right now) as one caliper is screwed and might as well upgrade if I have too....

      Anyone???

          Nice one Alistair!

          SO A3 front discs,
S8 calliper carriers and S4 or RS4 callipers plus some machining. But won't fit inside the 16" Avus wheels :-(

Paul you gotta give me the Oettingers now!!! pronto!

Martyn, I've fitted the conversion that Tommy Arnberg posted on Kruemmer last year. It uses 280mm A3 front discs and S8 (I think you can use S4's too) rear calipers and carriers, just a little machining required to the discs to make it fit.

Full instructions and part numbers here:

By the way at the end of that post I mentioned that there might be issues with brake bias, I think that I can confidently say that it is not a problem, true I have not tracked the car in the wet yet since I fitted them in February, but I have well and truly provoked them and its stabilty under braking in a straight line and on a bend in the dry and wet has been impeccable.

              Mark.

P.S. remember though thats because I am using 322mm rotors up front with the 280mm rears.

                Mark, you're an angel mate!

I could not ask for better info!

The S4 rear discs are 256, the RS4 discs are 312, so it looks like I've got to stick with the S8 calipers.

Thanks for the info on brake bias too mark. I now have a bit of a quandry... I have NOT upgraded my front brakes yet... so if I do this.. I could well be looking at lock up issues due to the effectiveness of the new rears and lack of effective ness of the S2 fronts! Cannot afford to do both ends.

                What to do.....

                Thanks again Mark

Now why didn't I think of that?

Hmm, now this means bigger damn wheels too... so the costs keep adding up.... why it that always the case.... :-(

:-) I'd have to use mega spacers and flare my rear arches a mile to take those puppies!

I've been trying to visualise those RS6 wheels on mine, I cannot picture it, they look poo in my minds eye...

But... I wonder.... if Hi-Spec do rear kits for ours? I just looked through their brochure, the 'average ' Golf rear kit about 320mm ish is about £350 - 400 for the kit!! that coul be worth investigating!! might fit inside 16" wheels to... hmm, phone call coming up tomorrow, failing that, I'm nicking Pauls 18" Oettinger wheels and phoning Mark a lot for advice!

                        :-)

That picture is a replica, so you can get them in an 8" width and various offsets. I was thinking about them but 5 spokers don't do it for me.

Steady on - the 269x20 rear disc of the UR or S4/S6 has a massively different 'hat height' than the S2 hub can accommodate. There is a narrower variant of 269x20 disc from the old 200TQ but the hat-height is still 6mm too much for a bolt-on conversion for the S2 rear. A large spacer can be used of course but I don't like that approach.

I have a set of S6 rear calipers & carriers that I want to put onto mine this winter along with the A3 discs. Think this ends up the same setup as MarkH except that he has the sexy lightweight calipers of course (at great expense).

                              Cheers,
