    Big reds anyone?

Popped in to see these guys today.... interesting!

    http://www.design911.co.uk/index.htm

    click on used then suspension/brakes.....

Not bad prices at all ..... but I asked for 996 front calipers & he brought out the most knackered & scratched pair you could Imagine. I turned my nose up then he brought out a nice shiny pair...... all the same price.
Then I noticed he was showing me rears..... so I asked to see what he had out back & went through to the warehouse where they had big reds, 996 fronts & rears (set) and a fair few others in red silver and black......

So all in all a good place to know but I'd advise you to know what you want go and pick em up in person!

£85+ is not a lot of money for a porsche caliper!

    </PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT>

PS they are nothing to do with me - so don't blame me!
PPS OH and they have loads of used Porsche wheels too!

Is that right - £345? I have Hispec brakes and only paid £85 + VAT for a pair of brackets for those. In fact the original Audi RS2 caliper brackets are cheaper than that aren't they

No offence mate just adding my 2ps worth to the discussion.

Leigh - any idea what they made the brackets out of? Did they tell you the grade of ally or steel? were they hard anodised?

Saw a pair of steel brackets whilst at dialynx last time.... must have added a fair bit to the unsprung weight...

Brackets are machined from unanodised aluminium. Not sure what grade but some form of 'aircraft grade' was mentioned when I asked.

Somewhere on the old S2 Central 2 list I did put up the weight differences in old calipers v Hispec calipers and brackets. Can't remember exactly but Hispec were a hell of a lot lighter. Less than half the weight I think :eek2:.

I imagine Hispec calipers and brakets will be lighter than the same from Porsche, but I could be wrong.

Edit: just found the old post:

Old caliper about 5.5 - 6 kg each
New caliper 2.2kg each plus bracket - cant be more than 2.5kg

Got to remember that the discs will be heavier though.

6082-T6 and then hard anodised and then the threads are created with timesert insert, made from a solid billet on a CNC milling centre, make them yourself.
Personally I would not put untreated ally next to steel as you will experience a reaction between the dissimilar metals and your brackets will eventually crumble to a nice white powder, so yeh! I would go for the cheap and nasty (no offence meant) but would always have at the back of my mind "is it going to be this winter when my brackets fail?"

Sounds like a helluva lot for brackets - and other brands do use much simpler methods - but what Corey is describing sure sounds like the pukka way of making these things...... I seem to remember Lee with his 6 pots said the brackets he made cost just less than the proper RS2 items..... so thats, what, £302 & the VAT........

Perhaps thats why the set I saw at Dialynx were solid steel......

...... but if that is the case - then Coreys kits inc genuine calipers, brackets, A8 disks and hoses - all for <£800 really is

PS "cheap and nasty (no offence meant)" I'm sure no-one will take offence

If corrosion is the main problem with solid aluminium brackets, (due to the dissimilar metals having a different electron number) why not get them nickle plated from someone such as Reddich Electro Plating (manchester) or Dowding and Mills at Scarborough or British Metal Treatments(BMT) where they would nickle plate them for 20-30 quid, Nickle doesnt react with steel or alloy and is non-porus, and is a nice titanium colour. Just a suggestion, could even get the whole calliper done and the pistons.
