Well, I bit the bullet and took the car to a brake specialist in West London on Saturday. 4 1/2 hours later, they'd got all 8 bolts out (1 sheared off and needed drilling out, 4 had to be blow-torched, and the other 3 came out with an impact chisel), cleaned up the corrosion, put in the new plates, shims and new pads all in a treat. I now have silent, judder-free, no ABS-triggering braking again!

I guess I should have persevered with this at the garage meet last weekend as that little lot cost me £200 in labour

Just hope nothign else goes wrong now. Oh except is has: speedo gone funky, the top radiator nozzle has sheared off and I definitely need new top mounts. Better not tempt fate
