I was reading a thread over on the Evo forum.... A cheap satisfying fix is to clean your calipers of all dust/dirt, and give them a couple of coats of lacquer...
Surprisingly decent results....
I found a couple of places that would do them but it was £4/£500 per set....
Take all the seals out along with the pistons and then take them to your local powdercoater.
Here in the US I can get a set done for $100-$175 USD. Then re-install pistons with a new
brembo seal kit (roughly $45-$75 USD) and your as good as new.
You dont want to powdercoat them as the high temperatures the braking area experiences may potentially bake the brake dust into them (i've seen it happen to a friends vehicle). You also need to have all critical areas machined to insure no contamination.Hi temp paint is the way to go (porsche caliper paint system etc). This is how the calipers come from Brembo.
Powder coating is absolutely fine as long as you select the correct material. I work in the industry and it amazes me that people still think powder coating is powder coating.
We sell around 20 key ranges in multiple colours. You wouldn't paint your car with house paint so why do people expect that there is just 1 kind of powder coating?
Brembo have powder coated components before its just their set up that leads to them not doing so for there bread and butter products.
Also you need to prep the parts properly and mask the areas, not machine the coating back off.
Paint or Powder coating best bet is to disassemble and clean so they can be handled with out gloves. Then if you don't feel comfortable doing the coating send them off. Any good coater will need strict guidelines as to where to and where not to coat. This is the difference (IMHO) between Motorsport companies and general trades. A motorsport orientated company will mask the bores to the inner seal face, ask if you want bores or threads coated for later operations, ask the expected temp range. A trade coater would just coat the whole thing in the colour of your choice in the cheapest material unless expressly stated.
As a side the real world affect that the coating has on temperature is negligible based a paint system ~100U compared to a coated system at ~300-400U. In race conditions it may have affect.
Yeah right, cheers for that. I guess it proves the old rule of "if your going to do it, do it properly" ( or get someone else to do it properly). I didn't know about the different heat grades of powder coat.
I have been doing brakes restoration for last 4 years. I have never had a problem with red that I am using. That is not off the shelf paint and other specifics that I use.
I can give a 12 months warranty for the calipers after they are refurbished.
List of thing done:
– Calipers take apart and inspected
– Every piston inspected
– Rubbers inspected and new putted if there was a need
– Grease put in to pistons
– Vent valves secured with ceramic grease
– Calipers sand blasted
– Powder coated
All the parts and more info here. Shipping is not that expensive. A full BBK set to UK is 25 GBP.
