Bomb "is it or isnt it?"

I have intermittent brake feel issues, yesterday pulsing pedal, today not enough stopping power, this happened about 6 months ago and then disappeared.

I have no Red lights, no beeps, brake bomb test seems to reveal little as the peddle is always hard even when the braking feels good (well as good as I have known, only owned for 9 months), ABS works when needed

Fluid looks good (green, full, no apparent leaks)

I am about to fit 996 + A8 front upgrade (just waiting for hoses) so timing is perfect.

Is there any sure fire way to determine Bomb is at fault or is it worth checking elsewhere first.

Do I Fix the problem before upgrade to eliminate the fault or upgrade ASAP and check braking ability after?

Either way, time is of the essence as I don't know if I could stop quickly enough if required at the moment.

What fluid have you been using- you say it's green? Odd. You haven't got a dot5.0 (silicone-based) fluid in there by mistake have you - Silicone-based fluids are a big no-no in the S2, and generally they have issues that non-silicone-based fluids don't.

Intermittent odd brake pedal feel could be air in the brake system - if the fluid hasn't been changed for a while, or it wasn't bled properly last time anything was done to it, you could have trapped air in the system, which will give you all sorts of wierd brake issues.
I'm not a Bomb expert (MI6 snoopers take note - bomb means something else here!) but I'm sure others will be able to shed more light.

You're definitely doing the right thing by going for the big brake upgrade to get more stopping power. What pads have you got to go with your new calipers? I would recommend the Ferodo DS2500 above all others, even considering the high price.

Good luck! If it's any consolation, my brake alert light comes on most times for no apparent reason as well!

Well if it is the Bomb, then the next question is-

Anyone have the best place to buy a replacement ?

Try VAGparts.com as well - ask for Martyn or Paul and tell them who sent you. They both run S2 Avants...

George, alternatively you can re-condition it for about £70.

7 Star Garage - 01487 831 239. They're based in Sawtry, Cambs. Just send em the old one and they'll sort it for you.

They normally do citroen stuff, but when I called em they said they can do Audi bombs too as the process is similar.

excellent. I think im gonna need mine doing. Is there anything to watch out for when removing the bomb? Do you have to pump the pedal with engine off until it goes hard before you remove it?

                      The process is not similar!

Audi bombs do not have a plug to be replaced with check valve as the citroen units do!

My bomb has been recharged. It needs a bit of work. Firstly a hole must be drilled to the bottom part. Secondly a check valve adapter has to be welded on that hole. Thirdly 70 bar nitrogen is needed for refilling.
Not actually a DIY job for all of us, but it can be done!

Greg, that's right. You have to pump the accumulated fluid out of there first. Them unbolt the connections.

I presume you can't drive the car around without the bomb while it's being re-conned? How long do they need?

Greg, make sure you pump the pedal a lot! I'm sure it can take more than 50 pumps to fully discharge the bomb.
I fancy getting mine done, just so I know it's definitely ok.

Replaced the Bomb, kindly supplied new from VAG,
Job went faily smoothly, but found it easier to remove the Bomb comlete with bracket and mounting bushes, then refit the new unit and refit the bracket and bomb as a single unit.

                            Total time 2 Hours

Total cost 220GBP including hydrolic fluid.

I now have the old bomb avail in an unknown condition (as far as the diaphram is concerened) if anyone requires one for refurbishment.

Has it got rid of the bomb warning light?
Did you have the car up on a ramp? I think my bomb needs replacing too.
