    Holy cow ive got brakes!

    ey oop all,
Finally got superb brakes fitted to my 94 s2 avant courtesy of Tim @ QRSport. After a couple of go's in his s2 and Karlos's with his Alcon set-up i was convinced. To me this is what the s2 should be like from standard. Although slightly vague from cold, the Hawk pads dont take long to warm up. Theres plenty of pedal feel and none of the wooden feel normally associtaed with uprated Brakes. The Calipers are 4-pot Outlaw used in the states by some of the Nascar teams and the pads are by Hawk of similar origin. Slowly gaining the confidence knowing i can brake later and deeper and still be able to haul up from ridiculous speeds gets a bit of getting used to, but im getting there most of journeys since the weekend have taken twice as long as normal though for some reaon dont know why Goodrich braided hoses front and rear with racing fluid was alos fiitted.
Bleeding the system after fitment turned into a complete ballache as my master cylinder turned out to be pogered
Alu subframe bushes and uprated wishbone were also fitted, these in conjunction with the QRsport top mount fitted the previous weekend have completely transformed the car, and i am absolutely over the moon. Anyone who knows me, knows im a (ahem) enthusiastic driver, and have been into cars and bikes since i was a kid, owning numerous quattros and other performance vehicles and this is the fisrt one since owning my UR that ive been really excited about driving, i absolutely love it, cant wait to get the coilovers fitted in the next few weeks and get it on track to really find its limits. Pics to follow as is a full article on the mods so far coming in audience (the audi owners club newsletter)
Big thanks have to go to Tim and the guys at QRSport, tim in paticular for his enthusiasm and knowledge and generally being a decent bloke. Thanks for the effort over the weeknd it is much appreciated you going out of your way to help. Cheers mate
    Nice one

nice one gav! totally agree with you about the brakes, after mine had been upgraded it was like a different car, although my original pads/discs were well worn front and back. my wife made me laugh when she used the car for the first time after the upgrade and said she nearly went through the windscreen

Congratulations! What size discs have you got? Did you just change the fronts, or did you do anything to the rears as well?

Not heard of Hawk pads - don't forget with new pads, they'll need bedding in so that may be giving you the feeling of not working fully from cold?

at the moment ive gone for 315mm discs, however might be looking at 350mm when it comes to changing them. Just changed the fronts at the moment, but im on the lookout for s4 or s6 rear calipers as they use a larger piston with vented discs and only need a small shim for the conversion.

Nice one, they are exactly the same set up as mine. My callipers are the old bremsport (outlaw-same company)4000 series without dust seals but easy enough to maintain. After 2 weeks of carefull bedding in and trial, i really nailed them from 140 to demonstrate to our lass how good they were- she nearly bit the dashboard as we stopped in an amazingly short distance (got my head in my hands for that too ).
What discs are you using, i have AP 9 Groove spiral vane discs, and i havnt managed to get them fading yet no matter how hard i try. For road use i cannot see why i need any better yet.

Make sure your caliper brackets are strong enough when you go up to 350mm. I have 362mm x 36mm and ended up bending the uprights with the first incarnation of my setup. I have seen some really dodgy kits on the market that use something resembling angle iron to tie the bracket into the upright...yeeehaaa!! Not something I would risk my life with when using monster disks but I trust your system is a thoroughly engineered solution so you shouldn't have any structural integrity issues. The S2 is a very heavy car and if you do a lot of high speed stops with grippy tyres the material stresses can be monumental!

I did stress analysis on my brackets to ensure they were the strongest part of the system but had to redesign them to brace the strut when using large disks. My brackets now feature a 4-point pickup to keep everything in shape!

Look forward to reading your reports of the system on track and how you get on with calipers with no dust seals long term. Get those disks nice and blue with some really high energy inputs to see how they cope under really hard use.

Well short term prognosis os good, had it round lydden hill circuit today, which is a very short technical track, think the brakes could do with another bleed but still no fade, 9 laps hard on and off the brakes intentionally tring to find there limits, tyres let go before the brakes did. Feel slightly spongy but no fade. Also surprised how little brake dust on the rims, discs were actually steaming after the 3rd session, the rest of the chassis let the car down to be honest, not the best suited circuit for such a big heavy car. I like my life, hence the sort chassis and brakes first then worry about performance, 230bhp isnt exactly tortoise like. Very impressed, will try another bleed before i take it on track again, possibly buy look at a different master cylinder (rs2) but im impressed.
