    bigger brake update

Well I ran my first track event with my newer brake setup. An Audi driving school.

    Wow.

Setup. Fronts, 996 calipers with A8 323 rotor
Rear, UrS6 caliper with Corrado G60 Rotor.

I was not able to get my upgraded pads in time, so I just ran with the Mintex Reds I use on the street. I still didn't have any fade.

Now it is true I am only running a 20V NA motor, but the only stock engined cars I had to let pass were the S4s. I was pulling away in the corners from the other cars, and they were two far back by the time we hit the straights for them to pass.

I blued both front and rear rotors, so I was getting some braking in the rear. Two long straights, with 2 gear drops before the turns and several hard 1 gear drop corners. 30 to 40 minute run sessions, 10 runs over a two day period. I never had any fade, no shudder, and the brakes just keep on working.

This forum helped me put this brake package on my car. I want to thank everyone.

    What a ball.

Sounds like you had a ball! What fluid are you using? Did you get any problems of "long pedal", or "spongy pedal"?

I use Ate, either Super Blue or the Type 200. Both are the same, I just like to be able to see the color change when I bleed the lines. Makes things easier.

I pedal was longer when I installed the 996s, basically because I was moving more fluid. During the two days of running the pedal stayed the same. No sponge, no longer travel, no fade, it just hauled the car down. Both straights were 4th gear 100+ for my slow acceleration NA, with 2nd gear corners at the ends.

I've just changed to ATE Super Blue myself, having used a normal Dot5.1 before. What colour is the other stuff? I heard a rumour that they do a red version?

Proper brakes make such a difference on this car: you can actually drive it properly. It makes it a faster, safer, more enjoyable machine.

Shame that people will not spend the necessary dosh...

to put such a set-up together. 90 knows what I'm talking about. This type of setup does not come cheaply nor quickly. It has to be thought out and planned with the utmost care. Looking for shortcuts will only bring you trouble. I'm waiting on my hats & rotors to be done but they are worth the wait and cash. The experience of having first class brakes with it's attendant parts can not be discounted. Like the saying goes "You get what you pay for". I wish more people would go the route 90quattrocoupe did.

Yeah, me too. I'll cruise over there from Phoenix and we can have a GTG. I have a guy up in Palmdale that might help me do some paintwork, so I have some trips planned.

I might try the 5 bolt conversion using used urS car front hubs and the rears from an A4 or whatever was supposed to be available in the states for about $150 each.

It is awesome. I have always been a canyon carver, but this was just a blast. Great bunch of guys, instructors, the whole thing.

The Ate Type 200 is a standard Amber. Same dry point, boiling point, wet point, etc. as the blue, or real close. Just easier when doing a brake bleed to see the color change. I have been using both of these for years, and have never seen the reason to upgrade to a 5.1.

From what I understand, ATE Super exceeds DOT 5.1 for dry boiling point specification. The reason it's not classified as a DOT 5.1 is because of the colourant they put in it, which means it doesn't meet the DOT regulations? The wet boiling point of ATE Super is very good too from what I can understand, but it's pretty hydroscopic, so it absorbs water fairly quickly, necessitating fluid changes more regularly than a strict DOT fluid regulation?

I'll look out for ATE 200 for my next fluid change! I definitely found the blue colouration of Super Blue a big help with my fluid change last month.

Thank you, Rob. 56 now. Been around a long time, seen a lot of changes in cars. From growing up behind the seats in a 57 TR3, to driving 4 wheel drive cars. Loved every day, mostly. Key is don't get old, thinking.

Yup Happy Buirthday Greg, You feel old at 4:45 AM when you have a fully awake 14 month old bouncing up and down on your bed, screaming down your ear....

My Grandma lived to be 105 and so did her sister, she used to comment about old people ( they were in their 80's) and 20 years her junior.

Age is a state of mind.

                        David

P.S. may get time to look at a possible rear vented disk conversion in the next week ( if I'm lucky)

Thats great Greg - your setup is exactly the same as what I am slowly putting together... I got UrS6 rear calipers and carriers nearly three years ago - hiding in a box somewhere and I've finally got a pair of black 996 calipers coming my way soon.

Thanks to the info shared on this forum I hope to be implementing this upgrade at next winters major overhaul.

Out of interest - what master cylinder is on your car ?
IIRC the 20VCQ has same master setup as S2 and therefore RS2...

                              Hi Paul,
I am just running the stock 20VCQ master cylinder, which is the same as all of yours. The upgrades brakes created a little more travel, but I believe this to be the added amount of fluid used. Actually, made for better heel and toe, because now the brake pedal is more even with gas pedal when the brakes are applied.
