When I bought the car it was leaking from the top plug on the servo pump. Turns out the plug wasn't tightened. So, I changed it and retightened it. I could still see a leak. Turns out the seal around the drive shaft into the pump was blown. I picked the pump apart, changed all the gaskets and seal and put it back together. I still have a leak. Now it's leaking from both the top and the bottom plug. The shaft seal is ok however.
Another thing that is strange about this whole situation is the following thing. Before I changed the plug the first time I hadn't read about the fact that you HAVE to release the pressure from the bomb before you unhook the feeder line from pump to bomb. I just unscrewed it and that was that. Yesterday when I did the very same thing I realized that my system can't hold any pressure at all - I mean, there was no oilspray what so ever eventough I had just driven the car into the garage and I did not use the brake pedal or steering (car running for 15minutes on idle, jumped in the car, drove it in, pulled the handbrake). There should be at least some pressure here right?
I did sort of a test to try and figure out what the problem was. I let the car idle, reved it a few times. Switched it off. Depressed the brakepedal like 20-30 times. No difference in pedal feel. Now - that means it is as firm with engine off as it is with engine on - since I haven't owned this car for long I don't know how it's supposed to feel either!). So i did another thing. I pressed the pedal all that I could and started the engine. No difference. Well thats not entirly true - when I looked under the hood oil had been flushed out of the servo container (lid closed, implys that a fair amount of oil suddenly went into the container OR that the pressure in the container suddenly went way up). Container is not overfilled, just at the "full" mark.
What is going on here? Where do I start? I was going to check pump delivery rate and pressure but the pump looks just fine (had a guy at work check it out). The plugs are tightened.
I can't really figure out what it is... But could it be either of these?
-The valves in the bomb are toast
-The line between pump and bomb are blocked
-The check valve in the line is toast
Or - is it a combo?
I've heard that there is a BMW option - true or false?
What I can't figure ot is why there isn't any oil spray when I unhook the bomb-feed-line on the pump... It really puzzles me.
