They are usually just a metal tab on the pad that contact the disk when the material wears out, which in turns grounds the circuit triggering the light.

Like mcandmar said, the wear indicator is on the pad itself. Just connects with the brake disc when worn and triggers the light when it's time to change.
Thanks for replies, so does that mean that if one disconnects the electrical plug on the brake caliper, the light on the dash goes off, before new pads can be installed ?
Or does the battery need to be disconnected for a while or maybe re-set with Vag-Com ?
If you take the plug off and short both terminals it should go off.
Correct. The pad wear indicator system is a complete loop from the AutoCheck system, through one set of front pads to the other set of front pads and then back to the AutoCheck system. If this continuity is broken for any reason, e.g. the pad wearing through the sensor wire, then the AutoCheck detects this and puts up the warning.
If you replace your front pads with ones with no sensors, to keep the check light off, you have to put a jumper wire in the body harness connectors and tape them in. I used 14 gauge solid core house wiring, probably about 2" long with 3/8" stripped off at each end. Then I stuck the stripped ends into in harness connector (instead of the pad connector) and taped them in with electricians tape. Has worked since 1999.
