    My 996 monoblocks fitted too :-)

    Well, they're on and what a difference they are.
    No problems fitting them, though I've got Graham (Tekkno) to thank for that

    1/ Black 996 monoblocks, (Bry)
    2/ Custom braided lines (Tekkno)
    3/ Custom made brackets in EN8 tooled steel (My Bro)
    4/ RS2 carriers to hub bolts (Dealers)
    5/ 12.9 spec Caliper to carrier bolts (Graham T)
    6/ Dot 4 fluid (Local Motor Factors)
    7/ Brembo pads. (Came with Calipers)
    8/ 314mmX30mm A8 discs (GSF, 10% off with my AOC club card :mischeif: )

    Note the RS2 backing plates, I've not fitted those, they were already on Alastair, did you have those fitted mate??

    Couple of pictures below, click the pictures themselves to get a full 1600x1200 image.

      Hi,
      I noticed the banjp fitting on your brake line. Was there a reason for the banjo fitting? I used a VAG hard line and it fit right into the porsche caliper. Same threads. Just wondering.

        Nice work, in stealth black too
        How worn are your pads? Worth investigating the Ferodo DS2500s when they're gone.

          Are you sure that the 323mm disc won't fit?
          Can you measure the clearance from the disc to the spring retainer on the pads.
          OR
          What is the radial difference in the mounting face from your brackets to the rs2 brackets?

            323 will fit, but not safely under 16" Avus alloys as theres not enough clearance, if your running 17 or higher then you can do it.

              There is not enought clearence between caliper and disc (when hot) which means you have to space out the caliper which in turn means you can't fit them under a 16" Avus. I believe that is the popular theory at least. Haven't made up my mind on that one. The disc will fit and you will have clearence when cold, yes. When hot - try it and let us know. Will probably tough the pad retainer.

                @Bry
                As Jamo says, it would probably fit, but not give alot of clearance.
                We had the benefit of being able to mess around with the carriers so that it gave us enough clearance between the caliper and inside edge of the rim whilst still retaining a good pad to disc position. I'll measure that distaance for you tomorrow

                @Dan
                The pads that came in the calipers I bought off Bry have a good amount of meat left in them for a while yet (I fact they look nearly new) but when the time comes to change I may get those DS2500's everyone raves about. I know I've recommended the EBC reds to someone in another thread, but they are on stock G60's and I know you had a whole load of hassle with them in your big reds. I'll aslo see what Bibby has to say about these Hawk Racing ones he's going to put on.

                @Greg W
                Not 100% sure here (Tekkno/Graham) made these up for me, but I think the reason for the Banjo was because of using one line from the top to the bottom we needed it not to twist. Hard to put into words I'm sure you know what I mean

                I'm reliably imformed that those RS2 spalsh plates never came on the S2 as standard, so must have been fitted at some point in the past

                  Those "splash plates" are I think forced ducts to get air to the inside surfaces of the discs - you're abosloutely right they weren't fitted to the S2 as standard. The S2 did have splash plates but I took them out when I fitted my brake upgrade as they fouled the inside face of the discs.

                    Thanks Dan "spalsh plates" indeed

                    I've got the excuse of having had only 4 hours sleep

                    These are just the "splash" plates, the air ducts are an additional fitting.

                      I never had any additional RS2 brakes plates added.
                      The RS2 has plastic deflectors on lower arm front wishbone to force air onto brakes.
                      A useful addition IMHO with uprated brakes.

                        Hmmm, strange one that, not complaining though. I can't get the airducts to fit though, I've got the pressed steel arms rather than the cast alloy ones, and they don't fit ,,,,,,ho hum, not to worry

                          Nice work Jas.
                          All these 996 brake upgrades are getting me down though.
                          Interesting to see your plates behind the disks. Mine don't look too good, they're only just in one piece. I was thinking of making some new ones.

                            Right all this concern about 323mm discs is getting me down again. I've ordered everything I need except discs. I note the RS2 big discs are actually 322mm (three two two) using the same carriers and a very similar caliper.

                            I'm thinking of going with 323mm discs then having 1mm removed by a machine shop. Surely this will give me enough clearance with some heat in the discs. I don't intend to be tracking the car so they won't get a brutal punishment.

                            I want to keep the brakes inside the 16" Avus rim for winter running - but I don't really want to go down to the 314mm disc if I can avoid it.

                              Paul,

                              The problem with the 323mm disc and RS2 caliper carrier combination is that the edge of the disc rubs on the spring retaining clip that holds the pads in the caliper. This is the case regardless of the wheel size.

                              To get around this you can apparently bend the retaining clip, or space out the caliper (which is the route I took).

                              If you space out the caliper you will then not be able to run with a 16" rim, which is why you require a smaller disc with a 16" rim... to avoid spacing out the caliper.

                              If you use the 314mm disc it's not an issue, as it will not foul the pad retaining clip on the caliper.

                              The 996 monobloc with RS2 caliper carrier and 323mm disc does physically fit behind the 16" alloy (tested it with my spare), as it does the 17" alloy. The radius from the centre of the hub to the extreme edge of the caliper remains the same regardless of the disc diameter.

                              It is only the spacing of the caliper that causes the issue with the 16" rim. If you turn down the disc to leave adequate space between the edge of the disc and the pad retaining clip, you should be fine with the RS2 caliper carriers, providing you do not space out the caliper.

                              Just be aware that if you have the stuck-on weights on the inside of the rim, they may foul on the caliper.
