    Brake Upgrade Advice

    Folks,

just getting the parts to gether for an upgrade of the front brakes, got 996 calipers (silver), a8 discs, rs2 carriers - but despite the large amount of good advice out there I still have two questions:

1 Do you need flexi brake pipes from strut to caliper or can you use the RS2 rigid pipes?

2 My calipers were supplied without pad retaining pin or the sprung clip - where can I source these?

    Ta for any advice.

The flexi ones that go into the S2 caliper wont fit, RS2 ridged pipes should do. You could try some where like GSF or Euro car parts, alternativly you could try Porsche.

RS2 metal pipes definitely fit - that's what I used on my old S2.

Porsche dealer is probably best option for pad retaining pins & sprung clips.

Many thanks - I have a source for the RS2 pipes so I will go ahead now.

Will post some pics once it's all done - altho I don't think there is mush I can add to the high quality info already here.

One other thing - is the brake bleeding process on the S2 fairly standard or are there any 'peculiarities' that you are aware of???

Yeah pretty standard, Just bleed the inner nipple first on the caliper then the outer one.

Bleed the right rear first, then left rear, then front left - leave front right until last. On the 4-pot calipers, always bleed the inner nipple first, then the outer one.

Some people also say you should bleed the clutch bleed nipple too, but apparently it's a royal PITA and probably not worth the bother unless you have specific issues.

The full system capacity is something in the order of 750ml, you should be looking at at least 2litres of fluid for a complete fluid change. Ensure not to use a Silicone-based brake fluid, ie. avoid DOT 5.0 like the plague.

Next thing that I need assistance with - I am having a little trouble locating the fixing bolts for both the caliper and the carrier.

              I think they are:

              M12 1.5 x 72mm - hex socket head

              and

              M12 1.5 x 22mm - normal + washer

I dont want to take any chances with the quality of these items (obviously) but where can I get them??

Get them from Audi, ask for the RS2 bolts for the calipers, part numbers are on the forum from Fourrings.

They are not available, the pitch is not standard, that would be too easy!
They are not that expensive and you only buy them once!

All part numbers & bolt specs are on this website...........

short ones came from Audi, long ones came from Porsche.

Bolts from a hardware store will be too soft - possibly even cast ally. You need high tensile bolts for this job - the proper ones even have a retaining gel on the threads to stop them working loose.

Are you serious?? You would use normal hardware store bolts on a brake setup ?, Rather you than me ! !

As stated by Bry, the thread pitch is different to most common bolts in being "1.5" as apposed to the common "1.75", but most importantly they are "high tensile steel"

                        RS2 bolt part numbers (audi)

                        N 100 650 02 (you will need 4)
                        N 100 880 03 (again, 4 needed)

You can of course use porsche bolts, but I don't have part numbers for those.

Yep. They're right. I've been searching for months (really) for these fine pitch bolts. They don't exist. I got them from my Stealer in the end. Not as good as titanium, but a lot cheaper.
                          N 100 650 02 = £1.52 +VAT each.

Many thanks to all - that's me just about sorted for parts apart from getting the brake pipes that I need.

Slight difference of opinion on these too - but think I know what I'm after.

If and when all the parts arrive
                            - and I get my finger out and get the job done
                            - and if anyone is still interested in this brake upgrade thread after all the good info that is already out there
...... then I will post some pics.
