Windows and sunroof - where's the fuse?

On the way home from work today I found that the electric windows have stopped working, just what I need on such a sunny day. Tried the window switches on all four doors (it's an avant) and no response so it's not just a local thing in the drivers door. Sunroof is also not working anymore.

First thing to check is the fuse but I can't find a fuse in the fusebox that is listed as windows and sunroof. Am I missing something? Is there another fusebox stashed away somewhere else in the car? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The fuse is located under the drivers side shelf (after removing the under steering panel). It's a thermo fuse, or it should be. It normally switches back on after cooling down, but I would imagine it's the relay (the double one) that's at fault. It controls the one touch down (and up on earlier models) on the front windows.

Tried the car this morning and everything is back to normal. I can't believe it got so hot in my car yesterday that a thermal fuse blew without any current flowing through it It was warm up here yesterday but surely not that hot.

Took out all the relays under the steering column and gave them a dose of contact cleaner while I was there. Not sure that I found the thermal fuse though. Is it the small metal box thing on the same panel as the relays? I did find a block of three normal blade fuses but they looked decidedly aftermarket so I'm guessing they are to do with the immobilliser.

Yeah, it's the small metal box. When I referred to heat tripping the thermo fuse, I meant heat generated by resistance, possibly by a sticking window or sunroof mechanism.

Yes, that is what I understood you to mean. As I said, I can't believe that a hot sunny car can be hot enough to trip a thermal fuse. No sign of any sticking windows or sunroof though. The fault is there when I get into the car and switch on the ignition so unless something is seriously wrong there will not have been enough time for current to trip the fuse

This morning going to work at 0530 the windows worked fine. Coming home from work just now with the car having sat in the sun and being very warm inside the windows and sunroof wouldn't work. I sat with the doors open for five minutes and then set off with the blowers on cold and surprise surprise half way home they started working OK again.

I think I'll try a conventional fuse to see if that copes with the heat. If that sorts it I'll get a new thermal fuse. Failing that I'll do what I usually feel like doing when my car has an intermitent electrical fault. Can of petrol and a box of matches anyone?
