does the ecu have a short and long term memory? if so how do erase the long term memory and what effect on the car does it have i.e does the car have to re-learn and how should i drive it after it's been erased?
could anyone please explain this as i think i might have a faulty ecu

ABY ecu (which I assume is installed in your car) has short time memory, which is power dependant. This memory stores engine parameters, which can be cleaned and learned by ecu again if the battery is disconnected and hold at least for 15 seconds. Also ECU has energy independent memory, however I don't know, what is stored here. I assume immobilizer and some ecu configuration info is kept there. That information cannot be learned by ecu.
What exaclty happened to your ecu ?

Easier way than removing lead from battery, is to pull out the "motor fuses" in the fuse box for 20/30 seconds
Have you had the ECU codes read? this may tell you something about any problems you may have.
Check up on s2central to see how to read codes if you don't have access to vag-com.

thanks for your input guys the thing is i've had running probs with the car for a few weeks as posted on some of my other threads, i've changed or swaped everything i think you can imagine but im not getting any faults up on vag-com and as im still learning about the car it seems the last option that i have a fault with the ecu, what do u think guy's?
the symptoms are as i accelerate from say second gear it's a bit juddery till i hit 3000rpm through to 4000rpm its just holding back, the boost gauge is showing full boost but flickering like mad and the wastegate is throwing out lot's of short burst's of air and it doesnt feel as powerfull ,it's like this through all the gears i've had it on vag-com with now faults showing.
I've done a boost leak check and
things i've changed for new: 1-multifunction temp sensor
2-hall sender cam gear
3-crankshaft speed sensor
4-dump valve
5-fuel pump and filter
thing's i swaped with djavant-MAF

by the way went to nurburgring today had to take my passat very slow, but saw sabina in her bmw m5 nurburg taxi, said hello she's even nicer than you see on the tv

Sounds strange. Symphtoms are very similar like I had during MAF failure. Maybe MAF wiring is problematic. Also I had loads of unusual boost, and rpms won't go higher than 4000. BTW try to drive a car with MAF connector off. Or just let it adapt and idle a bit. ECU will go into limphome mode. If engine will behave better, then you need to check wiring and connector.
