Mr Martyn Franklin! I salute you
Used the above pictures to replace all five of my coilpacks. I methodically changed each pack, splicing in each wire, heatshrinking it and taking the time to replace all the damaged heatshield coverings.
Whole job took my bro and my myself around 2 hours to complete.
I also found the source of my recent boost leak (my boost leak bungs are out on loan, so couldn't trace it). It was three individual cracks in the plastic boost pipe that runs alongside the cylinder head. Plastic welded up (Thanks to some recent training from NMUK ) and the drive of the car is transformed yet again. Couple of misfires on start up, but put that down to unburnt fuel in three of the cylinders.
Managed to break traction off a roundabout in third gear to the point of a 45 degrees drift for 50 yards Bit scarey when you aren't expecting it, but stunned all the same .

Thanks again for the quick service at vagparts and for all the sound advice over the blower. I owe you one matey.

I'll post some pics up of the "shocking" state of the wiring later, left my camera in my bro's garage, in my haste to try the car.

If anyone suspects dodgy coilpacks, do yourself a favour and replace them. Period.....

      Jas..

Even though I only changed the spark plugs a few weeks ago, I didn't really look at either the coilpacks or the spark plug connectors TBH, when we started to remove them today, the plug connectors just fell apart in my hands. Rubber has gone to mush. Note: the big split and two that are snapped in half is when I removed them from the coilpack, they weren't this bad in situ.

        Pictures;

        New Beru coilpack,

        Bad wiring,

        And again,

        Yet more

        How bad?,

        Perished connectors,

        And again

        OMG!!

        WTF?

New coilpacks fitted and new heat sleeving.

And a bad pic of the cracked plastic boost pipe. Not sure how this has got cracked? No overboost protection has occured, but the last three weeks I've been hearing the tell tale hissing at WOT. Strange one

Jas. I hate to tell you this. But I don't think this lot is the result of you washing the engine bay. I think that was a good move.

Without a shadow of a doubt you are 100% spot on Stu, all the above badness isn't the result of the cleaning mishap last weekend, I've probably done myself a favour by washing it as it's spurred me on the replace all that crap.
At £350 it was an expensive "spur" but as you say, a very good move non the less

Hopefully yours won't be anywhere near as bad as mine were, still can't believe the state it was all in. It's a wonder the car started and ran at all with that mess

Good luck with sorting yours, just be methodical and it's an easy-ish job

Hiya all.. this thread about coilpacks seems ages old... so just wanted to know... can you now get the coilpacks WITH a plug (not spark plug, the other end!) on the end, or do you really have to solder each wire and tape over the join??? Sounds very primitive to me...

As stated before, Beru or Audi do NOT know where your coil is going (1 ....5) and therefore are not going to supply plugs. Your options are cuttin existing wiring, slipping heat shrink tubing over the wire, soldering and shrinking the tubing OR buying new connectors and pins (and grommets) and redoing everything from scratch. Not primative, just tedious. Fortunately, you only need to do it every 120,000 miles or so.
