If I am not mistaken the digits are "lightened", not the background. So like the clock basically. However the temp display was an option, so doesn't have to be there.

If it's there you should be able to see some digits even without lighting.
I think the lighting is not over a "bulb".

There is a small bulb built into the temp display module which lights up the digits in red similar to the clock display when the ignition is on.

If you do replace it - it is a good option to install a 12V LED instead of the bulb. That will outlive the car. Needs to be a gentle hand with a soldering iron though.

Have a look on Mike's site here.

After having done 5 of these for people now, a little tip.
Do not completly unsolder the old bulb. The holes in the PCB are very tiny, and the legs of the LED are a lot bigger. If you drill the PCB to except the LED legs then you leave yourself with very little area on the reverse to resolder the new legs.
Best thing to do is to snip off the old bulb and leave it's legs sticking up, then solder on the LED.
How many times have I written legs

LED is best choice as a bulb will go again in the future with it being "on" all the time the ignition is on. Link to the LED to use here. you want the red CJ70M Led.
