    VAG-Com Help

    Hi ppl.

I have a Vag-com type cable, it has both the adaptor for OBD1 and OBD2 connected to it and it connects to hte serial port on my laptop. When I plug the OBD2 connector into my friends VW, it all works lovely lovely!!

However, when I plud it into my S2, 80 Tdi or my friends 80 2.0ltr, it connects, and the options screen says comms o.k, but when i try to access any modules I get a "module not responding" msg or similar. When it scans the ABS module, the ABS clicks, but it still does not connect.

I've removed all the PCMIA cards, configured hte comms port and disabled the buffers on my comms port. Anyone experienced this b4, or have any idea.

Any help would be much appreciated .

Iv'e been throught that list, and I do have a dell laptop, but I've tried all of those.

The thing I find confusing is it connects, but its seems to be the modules that are not responings, is there a particular scan procedure I have to go through??? pull any fuses etc...

Is it not something to do with the cables, i.e. only the proper vagcoms give you all the functionality on pre ODB2 cars?

I bought the cable from ross-tech.com and it works perfectly on my CQ20v and our URS4, i heard the ebay versions were troublesome with early cars.

VAG-COM works absolutely fine on the S2, but you do need the correct 2x2 adapter cable. I don't have the pinout details to hand but I'm sure they are posted online somewhere.

SOunds like the laptop is OK if it can communicate with newer vehicles. SOunds like the adapter cable to me...

                    Hi Roo

I went through this with a non VAG-COM adapter. The cheap one I bought worked with newer VWs but the S2 needs k-line initialisation or something.
You need the genuine VAG-COM adapter to work with the S2.

                      Sorry, but thats untrue,
I've got a non vag-com cable. Its a dual K-line (KKL) OBD11 with a seperate 2 x 2 cable. Serial connection the laptop as it's got no USB port.
and it works fine on every S2/RS2, S4 and S6, plus the newer Audi/VW/Seat and Skoda's I've tried it on.
The previous cable I had (also non vag-com but a different make) worked fine on all S2's etc, but stopped working after trying it on a 7A engine.
Needless to say "I ain't trying new cable on a 7A"
Mine was bought through ebay, shipped from China in 1.5 days flat.
Mark (Rotoryboy) and Graham (tekkno435) also have the same cable.
Bought from this eBay seller here though he hasn't got any listed at the minute.

The problem isn't the K-line connection. All ECU's use this for communication. Older ECU's like S2 also have an L-line that is used to wake the ECU and initiate communication.

Modern ECU's can start comms straight from the K-line. Cheapo interfaces work fine on newer cars but wont work on the S2 as they don't have an L-line connection.

Both sorts are available on Ebay. You just need to be sure you get the right sort. I bought a crap one from ebay ages ago and have since replaced it with a better one again from Ebay.

Should be possible just to add the L line to your existing cable. I'll post a cable pin out shortly.

Adding the L-line to the cable isn't the whole story. Support for the L-line will be needed by the comms adapter which couples the OBD cable to the PC.
