If you can see no digits (however faint) it is not the backlighting alone BTDT. Could be sensor under front bumper (worth locating and spraying with WD40) or unit that fits behind dash.
However I replaced all and still get same due to the 'wiring' behind the display dying with age. My specialist could take it all out and repair but I have not got round to it.

Si (Pastures) I've got a spare unit if you need it, which has already had the backlight sorted, but sounds as Alastair says in that it's not getting a signal. I'll bring it and a spare led to the NEC with me.

      On another note.
Si (HPmuirt), I forgot about this, Mark mentioned that yours was flashing allsorts up like a mini disco. Is that right? If so it's just the display (LCD), BTDT with one I fixed for someone.

I've got a spare display (yep I've got a couple ) if you need it.

Or does it just read _ _ _ _ "all" the time, if so it could be as Alastair says.

I've got a spare display if you need it, and I can also sort the backlight too. I'll bring them with me to the NEC.

        Hey mate,

Yup, some of the segments are out from each group so none of the numbers are displayed properly....some of them go on and off and others stay off....damn annoying The back light is fine.

When it first happened I disconnected the sensor and it showed - - - - so I assume the sensor is not at fault but the display itself.

I'll def take you up on your spare...cheers matey

        Cheers n

The back light on mine has just gone... Is it a standard bulb or am I correct in thinking it's soldered in? Any BTDTs or advice please?

there is a guide on s2central, you can use an LED to replace the OE bul that is soldered on
