    Thermometer display backlight

    Hey folks.

Is there supposed to be a backlight for the thermometer display?

If Yes, How do I replace?

    Thanks,

Yeah it's a soldered in LED. They are possible to replace. There is a write up somewhere. I took the easy route and just replaced the assembly, only cost about £60 from VAGparts.

Standard illumination is via a very tiny bulb which due to it being on all the time the ignition is, blows.
Replace with a CJ70M miniture superbright LED from Maplins.
Tip, don't completely de-solder the bulb, just snip it's glass dome off leaving it's legs sticking up, trim LED legs down and solder them to the old.
An LED normally has a flat on one leg telling you which is the cathode side, the miniture LED doesn't (LED's ony work one way round)
Use MikeS2's site mentioned in the post above to remove the module and to determine the cathode side of the PCB inside the ATD module, and this pic below to determine the cathode side of the miniture LED.
Be careful like Steve says, be quick with your soldering, ie; don't leave the soldering iron on the component for a long period as the heat may bork something else and be carefull that the tip doesn't touch anything else.

OK, I confess. I cheated. Got so far as taking the display out and taking the backing off and thought I won't attempt that.
A Forum member kindly offered tp solder in a new LED for me Trouble is the thing still has no backlight Any other ideas anyone can suggest The unit works, as in displays the temperature, just that it is not backlit........

Well, I found I had a bulb in mine... but only had a spare LED. I put the LED in, and it's backlit fine. I'm gonna change back to a bulb when I can get one though.

jubjub: make sure the LED is in the right way round. LEDs are polarity sensitive.

I have noticed that now, my Airbag light comes on for only about a minute after startup. It may have always done this, but i've never noticed...?
                    Is something wrong?

                    any ideas?

If the airbag light goes off.... then I'd assume all is well. In thoery they should be off or on. Airbag lights normally go off after a number of seconds (2-3 on the wifes Golf) so a minute is odd!

Anyone with an airbag S2 comment on how long thier light stays on for?

                              - nearly bought that myself - until I looked at it through babelfish:

'Offer here a temperature sensor for the outside temperature announcement .................. Picture does not represent the outside temperature announcement the temperature sensor offered here! '

                              - cheeky sod showing a picture of the display when he's actually just selling the sensor!
