    Headlight upgrade help.....!

    Hi guys...
Yes, another person posting a thread about headlights....
I have been searching and reading threads about headlight upgrades for about 10 days now, and all I am getting is more and more confused (doesn't take much to confuse a stupid person, so I am told)

I have just bought Alistair C's ellipsoid headlights off fleabay (should have asked here first I reckon)
I am currently in Romania with my car, and will be driving back to the UK in about a month. I have a complete set of front Xenon lights from a 2001 A6, including igniters, bulbs, projectors and ballasts.
I would like to know about wiring it up, and if there is a need for relays and such like when putting this into my car when I am in the UK. (I know I need relays for higher wattage, but for the xenon stuff?)
I have a 1991 UK Registered (RHD spec headlights) German LHD 3B coupe
Having read many many threads about this, put simply, can anyone tell me exactly what to do to ensure success?
I wanted to put higher wattage bulbs in for the drive home, and have found this would melt the switch in the stalk, I have no way of talking to anyone here as I dont speak much Romanian, and also nobody here knows how to wire up a doorbell, let alone a car...
I saw that Greg S and Four wheel drifter and Jamo all seem to answer alot of threads on this subject, so guys, please help...!
    to recap...
A6 Xenon parts into a 3B coupe, with later S2 ellipsoids...
Thanks in advance for any help
    Chris

Chris take a look at the HID Fitting thread

On mine i used the A6 ballasts. I changed the bulbs to H1 fitment HID's which you will need to source.

these need to be soldered onto the ballast cables inplace of the D2S connector.

I have also connected mine with relays to ensure brightness since the orginal wiring is a good few years old and isnt the correct ampage for the lights technically.

Then to ensure you dont get the autocheck warning you need to remove a pin off the relay.

Thanks for that, I did see this thread when I was looking. I also found something about fitting the projectors into the S2 light, thereby keeping the A6 type bulb (not changing to H1)
I will see if I can find out more about this before going H1, as it seems a shame not to use them....!
I am still a little unsure about how to wire up to relays, but I will keep reading up and see if I can work out the rest. If I get more ost again, I will be back on here!!
      Thanks again.

The relays are quite simple. You need two live feeds from the battery fused near the battery to feed either relay. The output of the relay feeds the + on the HID ballast. Then use the original head light wiring to switch the relay on and off

Ok, thanks, I have downloaded a wiring diagram posted on here elsewhere, and have bought all necessary...
I have wired up the ground to relay and 12v to relay, My problem is that I dont really understand where to wire the light to, and where to take the feed from the switch.
If I remove the headlights, I have a single 4 pin round connector going into each light. Inside the light, there are connections between this connector, the H4, the H1 and the sidelight...
My wiring diagram shows how to wire direct to the rear of the H4 bulb, not mentioning the H1 at all. Do I connect my relays to the bulbs internally of the light, or do I connect to the 4 poin round plug just before it disappears into the light fitting...
I am tearing my hair out here, as the more posts I read, the more the specifics seem less clear.
I am no mechanic and no electrician. I hav efittied many many in car hifi setups, but not using any existing wiring - so I can use a soldering iron... If I know what to solder.. exactly...1
          Thanks for any help....!

Ah i missed that you have the non elipsoids currently fitted. You will need to convert the headlight wiring to suit since the H4's switch from one filament to another where as the H1 setup switches an additional filament on. I.e. two bulbs.

You will need to modify the stalk wiring.

here are some threads to help

See this one which describes the mod to change H4's to H1's

              Hi all,

Sorry to crash the original post.

Ive just fitted the HID kit purchased from VagParts and im very happy with it.

Just thought I'd ask if its normal that they take 5 seconds to fully warm up and project at full strengh when first switched on. Also dash displays bulb out, but if i turn off lights and back on the warning dissapears.

              common symptons?

The bulb warning light is a very common one... aparrently, getting a better earth connection can fix this, and I believe there is a mod to disable it on the front lights as well. I never used to get it, but noticed since I got the car back I've been seeing it when I turn the lights on. I may try for a better earth and see how that goes.

As per the initial dim lights, this is perfectly normal. It flashes bright when you first light them up, becomes dim and then gets brighter as they get up to temp. Just the nature of Xenons. But hell, when it get's there it gets there

There is an Autocheck mod, if you search under Autocheck and HID, you will find it.

The Lamp pod is as per piccy!

                          Hi again guys...
Just to say I have finished my headlight modification.
I had some 3B candles, which I have replaced with modified later elipsoids.
I took the projector units out of some A6 HID lights, and made some aluminium brackets and swapped them over inside the S2 light, mounted the ballast under the light, relayed the headlight switch, bent over the K-pin, and did the stalk mod....
bit of a squeeze, but the cover even fits back over the rear of the unit...!
This means I am using the Phillips D2S bulb, and boy...... is it bright...!
Thanks to all who pointed me in the right direction, it was definately worthwhile...!

Today I experienced a new problem. Probably not a problem with HID, but linked to HID / HID Install.

As Normal i was about to hit the motorway this morning, after 2 miles of traffic the car is usually warm by now and ready for that initial WOT entrance onto the motorway I live for (and if its raining i always try n slide it a little just to wake me up)..

aaanyway, while in WOT (maybe 3rd gear), i flipped my HID lights on, not as that would make any difference as i was already flying at speed of light. And as usual, i get the "BEEEP, your HID lights are not installed properly" missing lightbulb display which I chuckle at nowadays. However as same time as the beep, the speedomiter lost power, dropped to 0mph, then back up again to true speed, all within a second, all within WOT.

Is this related to the poor earth (isnt that poor as lights work fine), or is it that the speedomiter cannot register speed of light our cars can travel at ?

@ That's Just a small blip in the fabric of the space time continuum, perfectly normal.
                              Nothing to worry about.

Seriously though, it sounds like you may have an intermittent connection somewhere in the speedo cct. Time to seek out the wiring schematics and a multimeter to help fix it methinks.
