I was plotting and scheming my latest upgrade on the S2 last week, when I realised that if I build the racing engine that can rev to 9000 rpm (I'll probably limit it at 8500 - a safety margin is a good thing
) the rev counter only goes to 8000. I can have the face of the rev counter changed to have 8500 on it, but then thought maybe a sequential shift light might be a good idea. It works like the lights on the Formula 1 steering wheels.
Surfed around a bit and found this: Digital Race Electronics Shift Light
I ordered one for GBP 94.95 and specified Green, Green, Orange, Orange, Red LED's and a week later it arrived at my local post office in South Africa
.
I fitted it tonight and it is relatively easy. I had to remove the instrument cluster (Thanks to www.s2central.net
) to tap the rev counter signal (blue/green wire that goes to pin 22 on the yellow 26 pin connector) and pick up switched 12V+ and Earth, and that's it! I have temporarily fitted it (with Velcro tape) to the right of the instrument cluster - must still see what is the best position.
The unit works for car with all cylinders between 2 and 12 (sometimes difficult to find rev counters that work for 5 cylinders) and you can set when the first light goes on and when the last light goes on (to the nearest 10 rpm). The unit can also handle revs up to 20,000.
I have now set the first green light to go on at 6000 rpm, 2nd (Green) at 6250, 3rd (Orange) at 6500, 4th at 6750 and the big Red light at 7000. The LED's are very bright!
I must try this out on the track but it looks like a worthwhile tool and will be invaluable once I have the race engine......
