It's like everything, you take pot luck with whether you get someone who know their stuff and those that just bluff, it could also be that documentation can be contradicting.

So, does anyone know what it works off, or does anyone have a wiring diagram for it??

Runs off the gearbox speed sensor, definitely not off the ABS pick ups. I've just plugged in a late 5 cylinder cluster, from a 1994 Audi Cabriolet (NG) into a 1989 Coupe 2.2E (FWD, no ABS). It works fine, so must be built into the dash harness, and take the same feed the speedo itself uses.

Ah, ages ago i had a wierd one where the speedo flickered about when traveling along once, i was doing about 70 ish and the speedo jumped from 0-170mph erratically then stopped working for about an hour. Switched the car off and started it back up and the problem had gone and never reared its head again (That was about 3 years ago), so the speed check would also get its signal from the same feed, i will trace this wire which according to one wiring diagram is Red and Brown 0.6mm, this should go to G22 on the gearbox, possibly VIA the fuse board, i am no sparkie so if i follow this drawing right it is a direct connection without going through the fuse board;,

That's correct, it's actually part of the engine bay loom, goes to the dash via the large black plug (not to be confused with the smaller black plug that goes to the fusebox).

All B3 / B4 cars with autocheck feature are enabled for the speed check function, plug and play with the correct cluster.

Cheers Delta i owe you a , i will look at this during the week and do some continuity/resistance testing of the cable and look at the condition of G22, would the car still operate properly with a faulty G22 sensor, does anyone know how much they are??

The car will still operate fine with a faulty G22, speedo operation however, may be intermittent or not work at all. If the rear differential lock is engaged, it won't disengage as speed increases, as it also takes road speed info from the G22.

Not sure how much they are new, but I've got a few spare ones lying about, I could post a couple out to you if needed.

I'm without speed check. It's not covered in my manual. I've tried as described in the on-line manual and it does not work. My car is so basic for an S2. Oh well... at least she is fast as ****.
