My s2 avant aby has serious electrical gremlins and i`m supposed to be going on holiday this week!
The main beams(low) are permanently on with the ignition & fuse no4 gets v.hot and smokey. With ignition off I can switch on fan and/or indicators by putting light switch in `mainbeam` position could the switch be shorting out?. Removal of relief relay(which tests ok) stops this,(none of the others makes any difference). I need helpful suggestions or a clever autoelectrician in NW London. See my previous thread 'water damage'.
Fuse No4 (15A) is for Reading Lights, clock, boot light, cigarette lighter, dome light, trip computer, make up mirror, anti-theft, check system, air condition, radio. Which is not part of the lighting cct.
I don't want to dampen your spirits but your symptoms are exactly the same as mine where a couple of years ago. Headlamps on with ignition was the first problem. This progressed to various electrical systems (wipers, indicators, washer pumps etc) failing or operating erratically.
Unfortunately the problem was that the fuse box had shorted out internally (not uncommon on A80 models). The only solution was a new fusebox.
It's not an easy part to change though as it involves getting up behind the dash to unplug all the connectors.

GOOD CALL Ben, I have just installed a new fusebox (what a price!) and everything works properly again.Well, almost, the brake lights don't work so I probably plugged a wire wrong (does anyone know which colour to check?).
Anyway a little thing like that won't stop me, I wasn't looking forward to the empty roads of Northumberland without the usual 290hp under my right foot!
Many Thanks again. Nick G.
