    S6 ignition problem?

For the past month or so ive been having intermittent engine cut-out when in idle and when driving. The car symptom seems like overboost protection but its not.
The car has no codes, then all of a sudden it comes up with "66535 - internal control module memory error" and thats when the car gives me these hassles.
If i clear the code while car is running then switch off car and restart, it seems to go away (most of the time).
But if cleared, then switching car off and switching only ignition on, the code always comes back.
    Dont know where to look!
Some sort of ground problem related to ignition??
    Need help please..

For some reason ECU is rebooting or expierencing memory problems. Things to check:
      1. Battery connections (try to clean battery terminals from corrosion).
      2. Overall voltage at ECU terminals
      3. Lost ground contact beetween the intake manifold and car body. Check voltage/impedance with the multimeter.

BTW I'm not sure what will happen with immobilizer if you will take ECU out, or disconnect the battery. Maybe S6 guys know the procedure.

P.S. I've fried ECU when one of the ECU ground contacts become loose ...

66535 - internal control module memory error generally comes up because of an incorrectly calculated checksum in one of the chips in the ECU. generally means close to 100%.

Mihnea is like always - right. The result is corrupted checksum. However bad chip, poor soldering contact and bad programming are not the only reasons (BTDT). So I give it like this 70% it's something wrong inside ECU, 30% poor ground or +.

Based on practice - on 3B (more often), and on the AAN, I've seen this error due to bad contact (water, salt, are common here in winter). So before replacing ECU - check that.

Why ? Motronic can detect too high or too low voltage, however it is not able to detect rapid fluctuations of voltage, what happens when battery pole is loose. When you are starting the car, voltage is jumping like crazy, this can cause problems, not only to the ECU.

Seems to be something with these new 1.8T coils im running!!
Never had this code before changing to 1.8T coils,
Changing coils makes the prob go away for a while, but then returns.
I think they are getting too hot as I havent upgraded my IC..

It's possible but I think it is a ground problem from your 1.8t coil pack installation. Check your wiring. Both grounds. Check the grounds on the intake and the cam cover. Look for broken wires (inside the connection).

Now I don't remember correctly, but there is ECU ground terminal nearby coils ground. Are you sure it's connected properly?

When changing to the 1.8T coils, the codes that came up were idle regulation - intermittent, engine speed sensor - implausible signal, mixture adaption - not reached, lambda regulation - intermittent, internal memory control error - intermittent.

After changing the 5 coils, I get all of the codes except internal memory control error..
Car is slightly better but gets worse as I carry on driving.
I have even swapped new wiring harness for the 1.8T coils, and no luck!

Idle adaptation and lambda regulation fault codes means you either have software that isn't tuned right or you have a nice boost leak.

Checked for leaks and the system seems leak-free at 2bar pressure. Will try stock coil pack again and see what happens

sorted out my cut out prob with the 1.8T coils. Bambi helped me out..
Turned out, the coils weren't pushed all the way over the plugs.

Im now getting "65535 - internal control module memory error" which appears twice.
The car gave me problems starting today. It just turned and turned, seemed like there was no spark for some reason.
Any ideas on where to look?

I don't know if you did the 1.8t coil pack conversion yourself or bought a 034Motorsports kit. In either case, the silicon rubber "boot" (ring) near the top of the connector needs to be trimmed (or removed) to allow the coil pack to go down far enough to allow the metal end of the coil pack to snap onto the metal hex part of the sparkplug. In my instructions (posted at s-cars.org), I make specific mention of trialling a coil pack on a plug (in the engine) without the rubber ring so you can get a feel for what the "snap" feels/sounds like and don't end up with the non-connects that you've experienced.

At this point, I am skeptical that your conversion harness doesn't have a problem. Cranking and cranking with no cylinders catching is either fuel pump or ignition. You should be able to check whether you have spark by pulling a coil pack out (keeping it connected to the harness), inserting an old sparkplug into the coil pack, grounding the plug against the cam cover and having somebody turn the ignition on and trying to start the engine. You should see/hear a spark at the plug. If not, you may have a problem with power to the harness. Or something.

If you have spark, its probably the fuel pump.

Ho ho ho . You will not have spark when ECU is giving you checksum error. At least on boost part which controlls ignintion. BTDT.

If memory inside ECU is OK, and something in the loom is playing with voltage - you will fry it. Trust me - I know (fixed last ECU I have only this weekend). And I have seen almost entire engine ground going through ECU reference grounds. Wires were really hot after cranking, and ECU was giving this error...

From I've have seen it is not common for unopened this type of ecu M2.3 to have memory problems. If audi660 is not good in electronics - he can at least verify if ECU is unopened one

I have suspected his 1.8t harness from the get go. I presume its not a 034Motorsports product but a DIY not done correctly or not done well. Audi 660 really needs to sort the harness out.

How do you get rid of the Check Sum error? (Remove power from the ECU??)
