Revcounter not working & ambient temp display

Just been driving home from Uni and A1 was at a standstill most of the way. Anyhow half way home the rev counter went to 1000rpm and stayed there.

Then upto 2000rpm for a few mins then stayed at 1000rpm after that.

I remember someone else had an issue but I cant find the thread at the min.

What is the likely source of the problem?

whilst I have the dash out I am gonna do ambient temp bulb, any P/N's handy for it?

    Cheers Guys & gals

A blown condensator most likely. I've repaired one by just changing the faulty component.

Down side is that the face and needle has to come out and the screws are not easy to take off without leaving marks. Also there is a potential danger twisting or breaking the shaft while prying off the needle. It's tight.

Also the dial face may be twisted behind the needle center and stucking it. If it dropped while driving this is not very likely but if it seems like it's stuck, most likely.

sounds like the dial is the most likely cause then. will have to see about taking it apart. I have more immediate issues now though, the spark plug came out of the head disentigrating the coil lead

Not sure yet, looks like spark plugs had worked loose on all 5 bores. But one went, waiting to hear if its gonna be a head out job for Church Road Garage. I think thread is knackered on it though and needs a new coil lead.

PITA though since we dont have a car at all now so bit stuffed for getting anywhere

The rev gauge is playing up again now, been fine for ages so got have dash out to take a look and will replace the bulbs at the same time but wanted to get them before I take the console out.

Can anyone tell me P/N and where I can get them from?

Think the ambient temp display is an led same as the clock illumination . Im not 100% certain thou, but need to find out cos my clock illumination has packed up .

                      This link may help you.

                          The bulb used to illuminate the clock is the same type as the rest on the rear of the clocks, looks like these below;

All are 1.1/1.2 watt apart from two 2 watt used for each indicator flasher.

The bulb inside the ATD is soldered in from new, but is often replaced with an LED due to it's extended life as it's on all the time.

VAGparts will advise how many are needed on the rear of the clocks. IIRC Ben said he can get them too in another post.

Remember, most think it's bulbs of too high a wattage that causes the faces of the dials to peel. Not to sure myself as most sit well away from the faces themselves and use clear perspex pieces to refract the light about inside, but better safe than sorry.

All sorted now, I went to the stealers and got the last 6 1.2w bulbs they had and even got them to put 10% discount on & then onto maplins and got the led for the ambient temp display.

Managed to get the ambient temp done no problems at all using mikes guide, i had one minor problem in that my board was a different design to the one from his so I had to double check the led orientation and drill the pads a little bigger to take the LED legs.

The problem I had with the cluster was getting the auto check off, I was being too gentle with it, gave it a bit more of a pull and it came off nicely.

The rev gauge problem was as I suspected and it was peeling off behind the needle stopping it so got a craft knife and cut the offending piece away, all back together and working again now

After doing that I decided to take a look at the short shift because the reverse lockout mod needs adjusting and has done for ages. Didnt quite get that sorted because my vice and bench isnt heavy enough to take the beating from a hammer to reshape it so that will have to wait til another day.

Then I went on to have a look at the diff lock since two of the illumination bulbs have gone so that is my next little job to do, i have found some suitable bulbs and will change those soon.

Finally I have started to sand down my sub box to paint and finish it properly along with adding some wadding into the box so we will see how I get on.

Its nice to get a bit of time to work on the car for a change!
