  • RS2 Alternator Problem

    Hi Guys,
Took the car out for a rare drive and noticed a nasty noise from the front, tracked it down to the alternator... quickly got louder and then the alternator sieved ! So now hunting for a new alternator.

I see there are two options either Valeo or Bosch. Are they interchangeable ??

Is there any alternators from other models which will fit, the RS2 ones are stupid expensive ?

If anyone has a working alternator for sale please let me know..

    Thanks

    PAUL

What have you got? Bosch or Valeo and what Amp rating is it? I think the fittings are the same as the S2 (ABY) but some listings for the RS2 quote a 200 amp unit. Mine is 180 amp (ABY S2 Avant).
If you have a Bosch unit, any local Bosch service centre will do an exchange. That's what I did and the unit looks like brand new and comes with a 2 year warranty. From memory, I think it was £200. I could be wrong as I haven't had the joy of taking a good look under the bonnet of an RS2 yet

Can't really tell from your pics. It's got to come off anyway so suggest you do that and have a proper look.

                Update ..

Successfully fitted the following alternator to the RS2, 078903015F which is listed as for Audi A4 B5 A6 C5 2.4. It is rated at 120A. Needed to exchange the pully and the plastic back cover with the ones from the old alternator. Turns out there are many alternators with the same physical size.

Removal & refitting is straightforward, just 3 bolts. it is probably only possible from below unless you want to remove the coolant hoses.

                Basic sequences,
                - Disconnect battery
                - Remove under tray,
                -Remove top radiator cover
                - Remove main battery cables from back of the alternator (two cables)
-Remove small blue wire from back of the alternator (this is for the warning light), probably easier when the alternator is unbolted as access is difficult
                - Unbolt adjuster (top fixing point)
                - Remove belt
                - Unbolt two lower fixing bolts then wrangle it out from below...

                Tips when refitting,
                - Put bottom bolts in first to take the weight
                - there is a bush fitted to the lower rear fixing hole which should be pushed as far back as possible, it will make fitting easier
                - Worth ordering a new adjuster as the one I took off was quite damaged.
                - Refit new belt and adjust so the belt twists about 1 quarter, check the tension after a while, it might stretch.
                - Expect to need a new under tray fixing kit.....

Alternator is working fine, pumping out 13.5 - 14v at idle and stead (unlike before), and no clanking noises...

                Hope this helps.
