    Which Altenator

    Hi Guys and Girls

I have a problem with my altenator in that i isnt charging my battery properly.
The car has done 167k and not had a altenator change but i need some vital info before i can proceed. I phoned LSUK today and they are shownig 2 different models one is 90watt for £70 and a 115watt for £145. I'm pretty sure its the 115watt one but they need to order it in.
Can anyone give me some guidance to find the right one??

Go for the 115 amp ( actually shouldn't it be 120 amps) the 90 amp is pony!

BTW I think you mean amps not watts

I've checked with Audi and a new genuine part is £300 inc vat and original was 110 amp with a uprated part to 120 amp. I can also get it re-wound for £75 including new bushes.

How long do altenators last for??

You are a bit paranoid about this

I don't know anyone who has ever weighed the acid in their car battery - not once ever in the 40 years I have been on this planet !

My stock alternator has been beautifully charging the battery for over 12 years now. First battery lasted 8 years which doesn't sound like a problem to me !!!

Why the infatuation about the regulator ?

I'd have the original refurbed to be honest. GSF alternators are faulty ones that have been taken in exchange and refurbed.

Hence their surcharge if you dont supply your faulty alternator when buying a new one.

Okay guys i'm going to get the original one refurbished because Jamo comes recommended that he knows his stuff. I just hope that the guy who's doing it can get parts easily or i have to revert to driving the diesel for a while!
