    ECU Test

Afternoon folks. Just a quick question. Derek (dm80) is going to take out his ECU and pop mine in to see if my issue is the ECU or not. I haven't had a chance to get in and under to check all the earth straps and vagcom just said hall effect sensor but i'm told this will happen if the car's not running (it's just turning over).

So my question is this.. is there any chance of knackering Derek's car by trying my ECU in it?

    cheers

Always better to try a suspect ecu in a known good car than the other way round

yeah, that's the plan now, Derek has my ECU and will have a go at swapping them if he gets free time this week. Thought it a better idea than sticking his ECU in my car and risk killing it

        cheers mate

          In general answer is NO.

In theory there is tiny chance, but if you will try it for short time (like one hour) chance for bad ecu break something in good car is miserable . Like one milion to one . And it needs time to burn or break something. It's made this way, that if the big problem occurs, it is not starting. If problem is small, then it doesn't brake something in a second. It usually needs weeks or months (like overfuelling, underfuelling).

P.S. I of course assume, that ECU is stock and not chipped. Read "never opened". . Bad programming can kill your engine in a minute...

            cheers Sau,
That's what I was thinking but I was hoping for someone else to agree with me (besides Derek. If he didn't agree he wouldn't have my ECU with him).
ECU hasn't been chipped or anything so hopefully there's very little chance of it doing anything nasty.
            thanks
