    3B ECU is showing CODE 1111!!!! I think I need a ECU

Well, I put my new MRC chips in and followed the directions precisely and nothing works!!!

Car cranks, no spark, no fuel pump, no fuel pump relay action,

I checked the 4 ECU ground wires for continuality and they are all grounded.

I pulled the codes 2111 and 2121 and the dreaded 1111. I think am fooked.

I then swapped back my OLD stock eproms (thinking the chips I got were bad) and get the same result of codes. I know the ECU was good when I pulled it from the 91 200 TQ I parted out to get the engine for this swap.

Anyone have any other ideas to confirm??? Does anyone have a stock 3B ECU to sell?

    TIA

Could it be, that you've mixed something, like boost and fuel eeproms. I'm not 100% sure, but if you did so, maybe both sets of your chips are fried to crisp .

I don't think, that it is easy to damage ECU itself just by changing chips. Check twice, maybe you've did something weird to the sockets.

Motronic ecu's used in our cars are quite reliable and patient.

I did this two years ago when I removed the extremely dodgy digitec chips that had been fitted in my car. I got the fuel and boost chips mixed up and fitted them the wrong way round.
The car would turn over but obviously wouldn't fire. Switched them back and all was sorted, no damage done, no fried chips.
@ AudiCoupeParts - Also make sure you have the chips installed the correct way round, they have a small "V" notch in one end that needs to be the correct way round.

I double checked the fuel and boost eproms. THe boost chip is on the board near PT and the fuel chip is on the opposite board.

On the USA MRC sales rep's web site... http://chips-ur-s.com/ECU/ECU_Pics.html

He shows the eproms "notch" must be towards one's self if the PT boost board is on the left and the fuel chip board is on the right. His ecu in the photos is an AAN/ABY ECU. Could the 3B's be the opposite????

Can anyone verifiy the correct orientation on the 3B ecu for me???? PLEASE!!!

        Thanks for your ideas guys.

I really can't remember which way the notches were, apart from I installed my other chips with the notches in the same way.
If these are MRC chips, I'd hold what you are doing and email them, they'll know.

I read this guide when I first chipped my ECU ages ago and the chip orientation it says is incorrect for your car iirc (I have a 3b also)
Your car sounds like its doing what happens if you put the chips in the wrong way around!! (ask me how i know )

ok, the notches need to face away from you as you look at the ECU in the orientation shown in the pic of my ECU I have attached...

So basically swap them both around to the correct orientation and you should be good to boost and enjoy your freshly mapped car!

Swapped them all and still nothing!!!! But.....

              I noticed something strange.

I pointed the MRC eproms away from me according to S2Dude. Nothing happened, BUT the one thing that did but didn't happen is NO CODES could be downloaded. ZERO!!!

I flipped them back towards me. NOTHING. No codes either!

I then popped in my original eproms with the notches away from me (just like stock)

Nothing!!!! Cranks but no spark. But I could now download codes 2121, 2111, and the aweful 1111

So now what do you guys think? MRC chips have to be messed up because they don't even allow the codes to be downloaded.

Where is the "great one" from MRC to lead me from the dark side???

I'm not getting it (I'm not associated with MRC in any aspect).

Is it so sophisticated to match marks on sockets with the marks on chips?

Here is (I suppose, because I haven't seen opened 3b ecu in flesh, only AAN/ABY/ADU) picture of opened ECU:

As you see, chips have cut part (or dot, or triangle showing pin1). Slot for the chip also should have clear mark. Just search for it and match the marks. You can see cuts on the eeprom in this picture.

Are your chips oriented like that?

Error codes you're getting - I suppose are generated from fuel chip. So we can assume it's working ok. I think you should focus on boost one (which is actually spark one).

Check slot for damage, maybe something stuck in it.

BTW, when you crank - is there a smell of gasoline?

Yes, my notches are pointed the same as your photo. THe notches are EASY to see and easy to insert into the sockets.

I have done this with BOTH sets of eproms. STock and the new MRC chips.

The MRC chips in either position do NOT put out ANY codes. The ecu become WARM when these chips are loaded in to the unit.

THe stock chips ONLY put out codes when loaded in the position displayed in your photo. THe unit does NOT become warm like with the MRC chips.

THe stock unit worked fine BEFORE I did the chip swap. Now it only dumps the three codes.

THe fuel pump does NOT come on, NO FUEL smell.

No spark from the coil wire.

All ECU grounds checked for good contact and continuality.

Only the the turbo's water pump comes on for a brief moment.

Warm is not good. Not good at all . Don't like to scare you, but if you put chips in opposite direction, you swap +5v (Vcc) and ground (Vss) pins. Who knows who may happen (depends on vendor of the chip, put they protecting diode, or not). At least atmel eeproms and flash fail immediatelly after such procedure.

Bad things may happend, and may be already happened.

What would I do in your place - I would go to some chaps (maybe local electronics component shop?), who have eeprom reader, and ask them to read the all four chips to a files. Two times each chip. Then try to compare files with any freeware binary file compare utility (maybe the readers can help). Of course look at the content, is there any "normal looking garbage". Boost part usually should have lots of "smile" symbols (0x02) at the end, and in the fuel part you should have string MOTOR somewhere near the end. If you have 0xFF all way down, or two files for same chip differ - your chips are fried. You need new ones. If chips are ok, then you need new ECU.

Also I think you must contact MRC and talk with them.

                      like kwlw says
sounds like you have a big problem there. Ring MRC and send them the ECU and dont touch it any more yourself.
You could have damaged a component while taking it apart and this could be the faults cause?

STock "new/used" ECU on the way to me. WHat should I do next?

Well, I found a good used STOCK 3B ecu today and I bought it. I should have it on Wed this week.

WHat should I do with it? I know Iam NOT changing, swapping, or messing with any chips in it till I speak with MRC and their chips they sent me originally.

So, should I plug in this new ECU and see what I get? Should I chance doing that?

WHat if there is an electrical issue in the car's wiring that is fooking everything up in the ECU?

I need some serious comments and ideas here guys!!! Help me out!!!

Thanks to all who have given there thoughts on my problem.

                        Regards,

                          Hi,

It's hard to tell you something, just looking at the crystal ball and not seeing the car...

If you connect your "new" ecu with battery disconnected, chance that you mess up something inside it is minimal. But it's still there. So it's your decision.

When I've fried my two ecu's, I've printed ecu pages from SJM and checked every damn pin twice with multimeter. And found, that one ground pin was disconnected. Good thing, that I learned lot of things about electricity and old ECU's.

For 3b you can also read Chris Miller's pages and check every sensor and voltage.

That should be the hard way.

Or you can just cross your fingers, and just plug "new" ecu, connect battery, turn ignition on and try to pull codes. If they are ok, then crank the engine. I would give 90% probability that it will start...

                            Joe:
Recommend that you go to the following link:

3? years ago I installed MRC chips into two 200q20v ECUs - had to remove the pressure transducer, send to Mihnea, have him recalibrate them from 2.0 to 2.5 Bar, re install them and the remapped fuel and timing chips.

BTW, make SURE that you take anti static discharge (ESD) precautions when working on electronics. There is a chance that you may have inadvertantly zapped the ECU when working on it if you didn't.

In the US, Steve Eiche of Shadetree Software has the capability and knowledge to repair damage Motronic ECUs.

                            Good Luck!
