    No Hazards - help!!

So, I was supposed to take the Avant in for an MOT as it ran out a couple of weeks ago whilst I was off travelling the USA... however, I remembered I had some issue with my hazards (ie I put them on once and they didn't work).

When i press the switch, nothing happens - ignition on or off. It's wired in, the switch lights up etc. It just doesn't do anything Any ideas guys??

The electrics really is my weak point with the car so I'm a bit nervous about opening it up... fitting a car stereo is about my limit, and even then only if it's "plug and play". I'm kinda hoping there's a fuse or something that could have blown!

Till I can get it sorted, I have no MOT. Seems I'm destined to drive the Clio. I was hoping to get it sorted so I could play this week.. now I'm sat here like a kid at christmas with the most amazing new toy and no batteries for it

Have you tried a new switch? Even though it lights up, that doesn't mean that it'll work!

Bit of a shot in the dark but have you checked that the rear bulb holsters have clean and corrosion free connectors?

This was the problem in my case.

      Good luck.

Check the switch Ross, borrow one from a nearby S2 owner and see if it works.

        Also investigate the hazard relay.

Check the rear bulb holders but if your indicators work I doubt it would be this personally.

OK good point on the switch - as I said I have all the talent of a spoon when it comes to electrics.

All contacts on the relay look good. Is there any of the contacts I can join that should have the same effect as switching on to test?? don't wanna cook anything tho.

The switch did feel quite warm to the touch, and is it supposed to rattle? so I think trying that is a good shot... just gotta find a willing punter now... damn night shifts! (david you working locally atm? )

I haven't checked the rear cluters for corrosion (thought that was a coupe problem anyway ) but everything else does work fine... worth a check tho whilst I've got the time!

Plenty of switches on the 'bay, but what would one cost at a stealer - any idea off the top of one's head??

Cheers, and thanks for the quick responses guys!

im sure that a hazard switch of any audi 80 will do of the same vintage surely....
also dont forget a common problem with the s2 avants is now keep it silent so the coupe owners dont get wind of it they dont need any more ammo now do they ...
anyway if the switch dosent do it check the wiring in the boot lid at the top in the rubber sleeve as this is quite a problem area on the old avants ..

Ha. So, many thanks to David for letting me "borrow" his hazard switch!

Unfortunately, it didn't work. "Have you checked the fuse?" he asks, to which I reply "Well the indicators are working - can't be"... a quick bit of education later, and he donates a 15A fuse to the cause and I had working hazards.

It's been a while since I felt like such an idiot

Good news is, she passed the MOT with only a note that one of the CV gaiters is deteriorating. I'll add that to the list then.

You're a fine one to talk about fuses.

I seem to remember a load of fault codes that we're fixed on someones avant by fitting two missing fuses
