    Red Dash Bulbs

    Guys

Been looking through various threads on the forum regarding dash board bulbs and come across many answers but i cannot find any reference to the Red bulbs that i have in my VDO gauges. Are the part numbers listed in the thread for the red bulbs or white. I have found that with the red bulbs the VDO gauges look amazing and would like to have the dash the same. Currently running on the organe cupped 1.1w white bulbs.

Cheers for your help in advance

Which VDO gauges are you using with red bulbs? do you mean the 3 aux gauges?

As for the main instrument cluster, all the bulbs are clear 286T (509T) type and as you mentioned, those for illumination are 1.1W (the various indicator lights and computer are 1.2W and the warning bulbs are 2W).

The part numbers for the clear bulbs are (colours refer to the OEM plastic bulb holder, not : -

    Dash illumination (x7) 509TMOR 12V/1.1W (orange) = 4A0 919 040 C
    Dash indicator lights (x2) 509TV 12V/1.2W (black) = 893 919 040 C
    Computer illumination (x2) 509TV 12V/1.2W (black) = 893 919 040 C
    Warning Lamps (x6) 509TGR 12V/2W (green) = 893 919 040 A (D or F)

I don't know the part numbers for the red bulbs, but better still would be wide dispersal LEDs as they put out far less heat and therefore do not cause the white gauges to peel.

    Cheers n

I have recently bought some of these which should convert all the bulbs in the instrument cluster...

        Red LEDs

Just bought some LEDs from ebay using the link from Wadd uk. Look forward to installing these as the Red lights in the console gauges give off an awesome fiery red glow when on.

        Cheers

So the bulbs are coloured not the instruments themselves?

would this work with the same bulbs/LEDs for non-s2 coupe gauges?

I'm liking the sound of getting away from the manky orange i've got at the moment

Yes. The gauges themselves are standard white but the bulbs in the back are red. I orginally thought this was a standard colour feature in the S2 but it would appear not. As to the working on other dials i could only suggest to try it and see. For the cost of the bulbs and holders circa ÂŁ8 it is not a major investment to suck it and see with.

This only applies to the aux gauges. The main instruments all use clear bulbs and coloured instrument faces.

Coloured instrument faces??? And how can I change the illumination color??? I think the same as Error404 (sorry but dunno your name though hehe)... I hate that old orange!!! All I want to do is a LED white illumination conversion....how could I make it happend????

I already have replaced the switches hot bulbs to a Red LED bulbs (the normal T5 LED's and took out the red face that the switch has). It looks good and now the internal heat is minimum. It's remaining to replace the A\C bulbs (to red LED), the cluster bulbs (white LED) and the oil temp\press and voltimeter gauges bulbs (white LED).

I am hoping that putting the Red LED`s in place of the standard white bulbs on the main instrument cluster will give me a vibrant red and get away from the dull orange. The red 'filter' in the current faces should allow the red light to flood through.

                      Fingers crossed....

It should do, I tried it with the diff lock. The colour was great, but the problem I found is that LEDs are too focused, so most of the light is concentrated directly ahead and that gives high and low spots

I might try again with the new difuser LEDs

                        Cheers n

But in the main intrument (cluster) how do you take out the dull orange face? Error404 and weak_uk, take some photos when doing it please!!!!! I have the T5 red LED on the Differential lock, front and back fog lights, ABS and the other one of the back window (dunno how is it called) switches... yeah, is a little focused light but once you got the right position... it looks nice whith a deep red color! HP_muirt, where do you get the LED difuser for the T5????

I might try roughing up the LED lens with some sandpaper before installing them to help diffuse the light.

I don't think you can, can you? I always assumed that the face itself was orange, with a white coating?
