what i dont understand is the fact that HID's are a safety improvement im my opinion. Just passed an MOT also and the tester said that they were no problems with HID's. Im keeping them in!

Yeah they are a afety improvement, to you! But not if they are badly adjusted, they make it less safe for other drivers, more so than standard lamps as they give out more light, and the pretty colours are distracting. IIRC HIDs need lamp washers, projectors and dynamic levelers, i.e. they adjust with the pitch of the car, not height adjustable like in the S2. That said, the S2's with projectors meet most the requirements I intend to fit HIDs to mine soon, but if it didnt have projectors, i wouldnt bother wasting the money on HIDs until i got some!

So yeah, they are 'technically' illegal in the uk, based on the fact the s2 has range adjustment not dynamic - but how many cops would know this let alone care?

As has been said before here, no one really cares what lamps you have, so long as they are adjusted correctly.

Got MOT on my Quattro Coupe in nx 2 weeks, will be the first time since i've had the HIDS fitted (in fact, the MOT garage actually fitted them a few months ago). I've just ordered another set from http://www.hids4u.co.uk/ for the S2 as well so i hope they pass.

I do sometimes get flashed by on-coming drivers coz they are bright mind..

HIDs on the old reflector lenses are still worthwhile, they make a huge difference in fact (ie. you can actually see in the dark!), but the dazzle potential is higher as the beam is less focused, especially if they're dirty (so washers are important).

I think you need to be even more sure your alignment is ok, and I think be a few degrees below what is required to stop annoying oncoming traffic just to be on the safe side.

              Hids

              Quote from the fact sheet

" when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place)."

IE we dont test them on the mot (aim & function Only.)So should have no probs mot testing them.Construction & use, thats a can of worms !!! Mot is a BASIC safety test.:

                OK - I'm tempted now...

                Hi,

I think I'm going to go ahead and get some; the argument that they make night-driving safer is a big draw, especially as the car often contains my family. What sane person wouldn't agree? (Don't answer that!)

My next question - which kit should I buy? I'd rather have quality than cheap & nasty and one that doesn't interfere with the bulb warning system.

I think the light interfere's with the warning system if you do go for the HID's there is a link in here somewhere so you can get around it. I'm on the hunt for you

Not all the HID kits end up interfering with the warning system.

@Tobo - VAGParts do a good HID kit for the S2. You need to know what type of light cluster you have now though to make sure you order the right kit - are they the reflectors, or the more modern projector lenses?

Afaik I bought the last one that they had with the higher power ballasts so i'm not sure if they have anymore as they could not find anymore ballasts apart from what i've got.

I bought my HID from an ebay seller in china for about £50. Been on there a year now with no problems and no Autocheck warnings.

I believe most of the autocheck problems come from the quality of the earth you use when installing.

Completely agree with you. Corey fitted my HID's earlier in the year with no autocheck problems. My kit also came from China - terrific value! Am considering fitting another kit for the fogs they're so cheep cheep
