Jas - thats odd then. I'll post a pic of the temp sensor in my pollen filter housing - VERY different looking animal from the ATD sensor you cunningly photod near the headlight.

For the record... Schematic shows the ATD sensor (G17) with a 2-pin connector with a brown/yellow wire and a brown wire. This connects to pin 2 on the yellow 5-pin plug behind the cluster via a black single pin connector behind the console. Don't ever recall seeing that one before - must be tucked away.

Really dont know if cars had this loom in place from the factory regardless of whether the ATD was fitted - it was an option on the S2 until MY94 when it became standard fitment.

http://s2central.net/atd_techy.html gives you the pinout if you need to wire up the 5-pin plug yourself - a link to a useful image is on that page to.

Some useful insight on how the 5-pins attach to factory loom as follows -

#1 white/blue vehicle speed signal (VSS) to pin #18 on the blue cluster plug
#2 brown/yellow connects to ATD sensor at the front bumper
        #3 brown to ground
#4 grey/blue instrument lighting is common with ashtray and aux instrument lights
#5 blue/black 12V feed from Fuse 12 - common with feed into lighting booster from terminal C15a on underside of main fusebox.

It wasn't an option on 3B's, but I have both my fingers and toes crossed that the dash plug is there (and it would be nice if the wire to the n/s headlight's there too) as I have both the sensor and display ready to go in.

I beg to differ - pretty sure it was an option on UK 3B models - but it may well be that the car had to have aircon fitted. There must be an old UK sales brochure about that clears this up. I could be wrong here...

Well - look carefully at this pic from 1991 Coupe brochure (UK version with RHD)

Looks like the ATD is there, though can't find mention of it in 1991 or 1992 brochures. It makes an appearance in 1993 brochure as standard equipment though.

Hmmmmmm, you might be right, although as it doesnt mention it anywhere in the writeups I wonder if it is simply the reflection of the dash warning lights..... the red light is mighty close....

Well I wish it had been pre-wired into my 3B, especially the dash loom, save some extra splicing! I've got a copy of that options chart and completely forgot that it does show that for some reason ATD wasnt an option on at least early 3B's - but was across the rest of the range I am sure that my cq20v did have the yellow plug (no ATD fitted tho) as before I bought my S2 I was going to fit an ATD after putting the board computer in . As it was an option on the cq20v it must've been pre-wired, but not so the 3b!

As for air con - mine did have aircon, but it was, as far as we can tell, a dealer fit jobby - certainly wasnt standard (anyone who has seen the car when it was Tina's might remember that odd shelf under the glove box to hold the ECU Now all removed and back to standard).

Anyway, good reference this post for all us like myself yet to get their finger out and get the retrofit sorted!!

                        cheers

Hmmm - the plot thickens there then when the option sheet is pretty clear that it was neither standard equipment or an optional extra on the S2, but why would they do that.

We need a poll of 3B owners I think

I don't think it looks solid enough to be a relfection of one of the dash lights. Maybe Audi decided to take pics of a fully kitted-out Coupe, (ignoring the options list) which included fitting the ATD. It does seem silly to offer it as on option on other models, but not the S2.

Last time I had the centre console off I'm sure I saw the little brown wire with the tiny brown rectangular plug lying near the shifter - it was a long time ago and I didn't know what I was looking at then. That's why I have an inkling that it's just going to be a plug 'n' play fit (although it's Corey's problem to retro-fit it anyway).

Be strange if it wasn't offered as an option on the early 3B.
It was an option on my old 2.3e that my dad bought brand new in 1989 (remember that car Paulgo? )

I have a '91 3B and have the yellow 5-pin plug on the back of the instrument cluster.
I also have an ATD and loom to retro-fit. I just have a few other jobs to do first.
