How do I check & correct headlight alignment?

The only sensible way is to go to a place which will set your car infront of a beam adjuster...any friendly garage which does MOTs ...Hi,
I've just broken the law and fitted HID lights to my elipsoid visioned S2 Avant. They're superb.
I have always suspected that the lamp alignment has been a little askew and this is now highlighted by the enormous amount of light pouring out of the front of the car.
How do I go about setting the alignment to something sensible? I've found two plastic screws recessed in the top of the lamp that seem to alter vertical movement of the elipsoid but how do I move them laterally?
Are there any pictures of the pattern that they should be producing?
Many thanks...
I've seen the light.

There will be absolutely no problems if they were ok before (but as you say might have been askew before - in which case, was it not checked before last MOT?)
People do tend to adjust them ever so slightly lower than standard....
I set my electric adjuster on 2 before I go, so this allows slightly more adjustment from inside the car too.....
