  • Alternator Question

    Hi all,
My alternator packed up last week so put it in for a new one but the one that came off differs from the one that the chasis number expects, 90a (034903016L) came off but chassis number states should be a 120a (034903016N)???
What difference would there be between the two and should I put the 120a or 90a on???
    Oh its a '94 ABY...
    Cheers.

Does the 90A build date match year of the car?. IIRC early ABY cars had 90A and then after a certain chassis number they changed to 120A.

Maybe its been incorrectly replaced previously?

If your chassis number is 8B-R-000178 or above it should have the 120A. 1994 is the changeover year.

Hmm. This is funny. >>8B-R-000177 will be fitted with a Bosch 110A alt.
The here is the important part if it is a Valeo unit you chassis number will fall between the range 8B-R-000178>>8B-R-0015000 then a 90A alt is fitted.

So chances are the 90A alternator is correct for you car.

        Phew.

Can a mod move this thread to the electrical section please?

I woudn't worry about that. It's fine to run the higher rated one but it won't make any real difference. Just get the correct one specified for your chassis number. Or have your existing one reconditioned if possible.

            Running a 90A one when you should have a 120A isn't advisable.
