New fuel pump fitted now the gauge doesn't work

Just had a New fuel pump fitted now the fuel gauge doesn't work properly.

After a very terrifying engine cut-out when the pump failed I've had it replaced. The fuel gauge now doesn't seem to work properly. Full tank shows full on the gauge but empty shows 3/4s on the gauge. Is it possible that when the garage changed the pump they have knocked the tank level sender etc?

The sender has to be removed to gain access to the fuel pump, so it's pretty likely.

Oh, yeah. If they didn't pay attention to what they were doing, they could have got the float swing arm messed up with the wires and hoses when they put the sending unit back in the tank.

I point this out as a potential problem in Item 16 in the instructions I wrote for changing the fuel pump on a C4 S4/S6:

          Thanks for the replies.

The car computer still shows when the tank level drops to a point that the petrol warning display comes on.
How does it know the level if there's an issue with the sender?
Or is my problem not the sender but the gauge or something else?
