    Fog Light Problem.

    Hello,

I have had a problem with my fog lights for ages now.

They dont come on. Both front and rear don't illuminate when the switches are pressed.

I have checked Fuse, Relay, Switches, Bulbs, Wiring at the lights.

Anyone know what could be coursing them to not work? They were working fine but just stopped turning on one day about a year ago.

Also, the top half of the switches still illuminate, but the on/off indicator bulbs don't come on when the switches are pressed in.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Did you check both 15A fuses S1 and S15? Also check pin 5/58a on each switch for 12V. Did you test the make/break continuity of the switches between 5/58a and 6?
Earth points too - in the rear wiring and headlight looms.

I have a similar probelm on my TDi. The rear foglight only works with the side lights on. When I switch to headlights the foglight goes off. We think it is a fault with the switch but I've only got spare early pre '95 stalks so can't test my theory.

        Cheers guys.

@ Nuvo both fuses are ok but Ill recheck the switches again. Also, if one earth point was bad would that effect both front and rear fog lights?

That may be possible given that there is link between the front and rear switches via the dash wiring loom. This is for when you select the rear fog and the fronts come on independently. I may have that the wrong way around I can't remember.

Looking at the diagram, I don't think that would be possible afterall as they are on different looms and two simple parallel circuits.

Unplug the foglight and stick a multimeter in the two holes on the connectors and check for +12v when the switch is on. That will show all fuses/relays are working

I had a problem with one of mine for the longest, turned out that the ground post on the foglight was badly corroded

edit: whoops didn't see the light wasn't coming on, on the actual switch! You sure there are good light bulbs in there?

The fog light switch illumination is on a different circuit entirely. Correction: it splits two ways for the two lamps in each switch with a common ground.

Aren't the switches identical only with different covers?

                    Hi Guys,

                    Im still struggling with this.
Also i have MOT tomorrow so really need to get the rear ones working.

Here a pic of the dash connectors for front and rear fog lights.

                    fog.jpg

Can some one tell me what i would have to bridge on the switch to get the lights to come on? I have also marked on where i get +12 v

                    Any help is much appreciated.

                    Thanks.

                      Also,
Heres a pic of the rear cluster connector.

Can any one tell me what the earth feed would be for the fog light?

I have tried cleaning them. Still nothing, The wired thing is that if i bridge power from the rear lights to the fog light it still doesn't come on, all what happens is that the rear lights get dimmer. So it must be an earth thing somewhere.

If i new what the bridge at the dash connectors that would help as it would illuminate the switches.

                          Ill keep trying.

I'm working on the same problem on my TDi. I've got the wiring diagram at home so when I get back this afternoon I will try and scan it for you.

Cheers Ben, That would be great.
In the mean time i think i will run a new cable from the switch to the rear +v fog light cluster feeds. That should do the trick to pass the MOT.

What baffles me is that when i bridge the rear light and the fog light it blows the rear light fuse:

                              rear fog.jpg

I would have thought that when there is power going to the rear lights the bridge would simply illuminate the fog light.
